Essaouira (formerly Mogador) is the antidote to Marrakech's intensity. This 18th-century fortified port town, designed by French architect Théodore Cornut for Sultan Mohammed III, exudes a calm, bohemian energy. The ramparts face the Atlantic, where the constant alizée trade winds make it a world-class windsurfing and kitesurfing destination.
The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, is refreshingly easy to navigate with wide, straight streets. The town has long attracted artists — Jimi Hendrix famously visited in 1969 — and today galleries, woodworking shops, and music venues line the charming streets. The Gnaoua World Music Festival each June transforms the town into a massive open-air concert.
The fish market by the port serves the freshest seafood in Morocco, grilled to order for a few dirhams.
