Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech & Explore the Medina
Morning: Arrival & Check-In
Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). Most European flights arrive by late morning. A petit taxi from the airport to the medina costs from 70 MAD — agree on the price before climbing in, or use the fixed-rate airport shuttle for 30 MAD. Check into your riad near Riad Zitoun or Derb Dabachi, both central neighborhoods that keep you within ten minutes of every major sight. Accept the welcome mint tea, climb to the rooftop terrace, and orient yourself by spotting the Koutoubia minaret to the west.
Afternoon: Jemaa el-Fnaa & the Northern Souks
Walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa by 4 PM when the square shifts from daytime calm to an open-air spectacle of snake charmers, henna artists, and juice vendors (fresh orange juice from 5 MAD per glass). Before the dinner crowds arrive, head north into the souk labyrinth: the Souk Sebbaghine (dyers souk) is a riot of hung yarn in every color, Rahba Kedima sells spices and apothecary goods, and the narrow alleys near Souk Semmarine are packed with leather bags, ceramics, and brass lanterns. Haggling is expected — open at 40 percent of the asking price and settle somewhere in between.
Evening: Dinner at Jemaa el-Fnaa or a Rooftop Restaurant
Return to the square for dinner. The numbered food stalls (stall 14 and stall 1 are consistent crowd favorites) serve grilled meats, harira soup, and msemen flatbreads for from 40 MAD per person. For a calmer meal, walk to Nomad on Derb Aajane (mains from 90 MAD) for modern Moroccan plates with a rooftop terrace above the spice square. Wind down with a stroll through the lit-up medina — the alleyways take on a different character after dark.
Street food dinner at Jemaa el-Fnaa from 40 MAD. Rooftop restaurants from 120 MAD.
Hostel dorm in the medina from 80 MAD per night (Hostel Kif Kif, Rodamon Riad)
Traditional riad from 400 MAD per night (Riad Dar Zaman, Riad BE Marrakech)
Boutique riad from 1,500 MAD per night (La Mamounia, Royal Mansour)
