What is a Hammam? A hammam is a public steam bath, central to Moroccan hygiene and social life for centuries. Think of it as a communal sauna combined with a deep exfoliation treatment.
What to Bring: A kiis (exfoliating glove), savon beldi (black olive soap), a change of underwear, flip-flops, and a towel. Most hammams sell these if you forget.
The Process: You enter the cool room first, then move to progressively hotter rooms. After sweating for 15-20 minutes, apply black soap and wait 10 minutes. Then scrub vigorously with the kiis. The amount of dead skin that comes off is always impressive.
Modesty: In local hammams, men and women have separate sessions or separate facilities. Men typically wear underwear or shorts. Women wear underwear on the bottom. Complete nudity is not the norm.
Local vs. Tourist Hammam: A neighborhood hammam costs 10-20 MAD and offers the authentic experience but no frills. Tourist hammams (200-600 MAD) provide private rooms, argan oil massages, and rhassoul clay masks.
