The Moroccan souk is a marketplace and a social institution rolled into one. Haggling is expected, enjoyed, and part of the experience.
Rule #1: It is a Conversation, Not a Fight. Shopkeepers enjoy the process. Start with pleasantries, accept tea if offered, and take your time. Rushing signals you are an easy target.
Know Your Prices: Research fair prices before entering the souks. A leather bag should cost 200-500 MAD, a silk scarf 100-250 MAD, a small carpet 500-2,000 MAD. These ranges help you anchor your negotiation.
The Opening Move: The shopkeeper names a price (often 3-5x the fair value). Show polite interest, then counter at about one-third. This starts the dance.
The Walk-Away: Your most powerful tool. If negotiations stall, politely thank the vendor and begin to leave. If the price was close to fair, they will call you back with a lower offer.
Bundling: Buying multiple items? Negotiate them as a package deal. Vendors prefer moving inventory and will often give significant discounts for multiple purchases.
When Not to Haggle: Fixed-price shops (prix fixe) exist and are clearly marked. Cooperatives set fair prices for artisans. Food stalls and bakeries have standard prices. Use these as price benchmarks.
The Golden Rule: A fair deal is one where both parties are happy. Do not haggle someone down to a price that feels too low. The extra 20 MAD means more to the artisan than it does to you.
