About Taza
Taza occupies one of the most strategic positions in Morocco, commanding the Taza Gap — a narrow mountain pass between the Rif and Middle Atlas that has been the primary invasion route between eastern and western Morocco for millennia. The old town (Taza Haut) sits on a rocky plateau and contains one of the oldest mosques in the country, the 12th-century Grand Mosque built by the Almohads, which predates many of the famous mosques of Fes.
The Tazekka National Park, established in 1950 and expanded in 2004, protects cork oak and cedar forests just south of the city. Its highlights include the Friouato Caves — among the deepest in Africa at over 270 meters — the Ras el-Ma waterfall, and the volcanic Dayat Chiker lake that fills seasonally.
The park offers excellent hiking through landscapes ranging from dense forest to dramatic limestone gorges. Taza is rarely visited by international tourists, making it one of the most authentic and rewarding detours in Morocco.
