Yes — ONCF trains are generally safe, punctual on the main lines, and well-maintained. First class offers reserved, numbered seats in air-conditioned carriages, and the Casablanca–Marrakech route is one of the most reliable in Africa. The Al Boraq TGV between Tangier and Casablanca reaches 320 km/h and is genuinely impressive. For city-to-city hops on the main Atlantic corridor, the train is hard to beat. The limitation is reach: if your itinerary touches the desert, gorges, or northern mountain towns, you will need another option.

Indicative costs depend heavily on distance, vehicle type and duration. A single transfer — say, Marrakech to Essaouira (2.5 hours) — typically starts around 800–1,200 MAD ($80–$120). A full-day private driver in a comfortable vehicle runs roughly 1,200–2,000 MAD ($120–$200). For a multi-day private tour covering Marrakech, the Atlas, Merzouga and Fes over five days, expect to budget from around 5,000–9,000 MAD per person depending on group size, vehicle class and accommodation tier. Shared among two to four people, a private driver often costs less than you expect per head.

There is no direct train between Marrakech and Fes — you must change at Casablanca, which adds at least 90 minutes to the journey and turns what should be a five-hour trip into something closer to seven. Most travellers who want to cover the Marrakech–Fes route sensibly do it by private vehicle over two to three days, routing through Aït Benhaddou, Todra Gorge and the Sahara. That way the journey is the destination, not a necessary inconvenience.

A bus ticket is cheaper in absolute terms — often 70–130 MAD for a long haul vs several hundred MAD for a private transfer. But the comparison changes when you factor in: the taxi fare from the bus station to your riad, any missed stops along the way, and the value of flexibility. In a group of three or four people, a private driver for a multi-day trip can cost only marginally more per person than separate bus tickets, while giving you door-to-door comfort, stops at places no bus reaches, and a built-in guide.

On routes the train serves — particularly Casablanca to Tangier on the Al Boraq TGV (2h 10 min) or Casablanca to Marrakech on ONCF (2h 40 min) — the train wins outright. For any route not served by rail, a private driver in a well-maintained car is typically faster than a bus, because buses stop at multiple towns and follow bus-station logic rather than a direct route. Flying is an option between Marrakech and Fes, but the airport transfer time at both ends usually erases any time advantage for journeys under five hours.

CTM and Supratours (the two reputable long-distance operators) run modern, air-conditioned coaches with reclining seats and luggage holds — broadly comparable to mid-range European coaches. Overnight runs like Casablanca to Marrakech or Marrakech to Agadir are comfortable enough. The issue is the duration: a 10-hour overnight bus to Merzouga, arriving at 5am in a desert village, is a very different experience to a well-timed private vehicle that lets you stop at the Todra Gorge for lunch and reach the dunes in time for a camel ride at sunset.

If the Merzouga dunes or Zagora are on your list, a private driver or guided tour is essentially the only practical choice. The bus to Merzouga is a gruelling 10-plus hours from Marrakech with limited return options, and there is no train at all. A private vehicle lets you break the journey with scenery — the Dadès Gorge, the palm-lined Ziz Valley, the kasbahs of the Draa — so the drive itself becomes part of the experience rather than something to survive.
