How to Get from Marrakech Airport to the Medina

Petit taxis (beige in Marrakech) wait outside arrivals. They rarely use the meter from the airport, so agree the price before getting in — a fair fare to the medina is roughly 100–150 MAD by day, with a legitimate surcharge (often around 50%) at night. Drivers may open much higher, so politely negotiate or walk to the rank and ask another.

Have small dirham notes ready (you can withdraw from airport ATMs), and tell the driver your riad’s nearest medina gate, since cars can’t always reach the door.

The cheapest option is the #19 airport shuttle bus, which loops to Jemaa el-Fnaa and the medina edge for a few dirham — fine if you travel light and aren’t in a rush. It runs roughly every half hour.

The easiest, especially after a long flight or arriving at night, is a pre-booked private transfer: a driver meets you in arrivals with a name board and takes you (and helps with bags through the alleys) for a fixed price agreed in advance. Many riads arrange this — ask when you book.

Withdraw dirham at an airport ATM (choose to be charged in dirham), keep small notes for the taxi, and have your riad’s name, address and nearest gate written down or on your phone. A local SIM/eSIM helps you message your riad on arrival.

If a “helper” grabs your bags uninvited, a polite firm decline is fine — only accept help you actually want, and tip small if you do.
