The Medina (Old City)
Best for first-timers and atmosphere-seekers
The medina is why most people come to Marrakech at all. Staying inside the ancient walls means waking to the call to prayer, stepping directly into souks that have changed little in centuries, and eating dinner fifty metres from Jemaa el-Fna. Riad accommodation is the star here: courtyards with plunge pools, orange-blossom breakfasts, and zellige-tiled staircases narrow enough to touch both walls. The trade-off is that addresses can be genuinely hard to find — even with GPS, you will walk the last five minutes on foot through alleys too tight for cars.
Pros
- Five-minute walk to Jemaa el-Fna
- Riad stays — some of Morocco's best hotels
- Atmospheric lanes, souks, and hammams on your doorstep
- Most central location for medina sightseeing
Cons
- No cars inside the narrow derbs — luggage by hand or mule cart
- Can feel maze-like at night for first-timers
- Noisy near main squares (earplugs help)
- Budget riads vary wildly in quality
Price range (indicative)
From ~350 MAD/night (basic riad) to 3,500+ MAD/night (boutique luxury)
