Best Time to Visit Ouarzazate

The best season for Ouarzazate. Warm but not oppressive, with clear skies perfect for photography. Ait Benhaddou, Skoura's palmeries, and the Draa Valley are at their most beautiful. Roses bloom in the Dadès Valley (late April–May), and the Roses Festival in El Kelaa M'Gouna draws visitors from across Morocco. The Tizi n'Tichka pass is reliably open.

Extremely hot. Ouarzazate is on the edge of the Sahara, and summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. Hotels are cheap and empty, which has its appeal, but outdoor exploration is limited to early morning and late afternoon. Film studios (Atlas Studios, CLA Studios) offer air-conditioned relief. Evenings cool pleasantly to 20–25°C.

September still runs hot (up to 35°C), but October and November are excellent. The desert heat subsides, skies stay clear, and the golden light on the kasbahs is spectacular. The date harvest in the Draa Valley (October) adds local colour. Fewer tourists than spring, excellent conditions for the Todra and Dadès Gorges.

Winter days are sunny and pleasant (15–18°C) but nights drop sharply (2–5°C), sometimes near freezing. The Tizi n'Tichka pass can close after heavy snowfall — check conditions before driving from Marrakech. Clear winter skies mean exceptional visibility and the snow-capped High Atlas create a dramatic backdrop to the red-earth kasbahs.

How hot does Ouarzazate get in summer?
Ouarzazate regularly hits 40–45°C (104–113°F) in July and August. The dry desert heat makes it feel slightly more bearable than humid destinations, but outdoor sightseeing becomes uncomfortable from midday to 4 PM. If you must visit in summer, plan activities for early morning and late afternoon.
Does it snow in Ouarzazate?
Snow in Ouarzazate itself is extremely rare (it happened memorably in 2012 and 2018), but the nearby High Atlas passes — including the Tizi n'Tichka pass connecting to Marrakech — can be snow-covered from December through March. This can occasionally close the mountain road. The Atlas Mountains visible from Ouarzazate are often snow-capped in winter.
