About Larache
Larache is an underrated coastal town at the mouth of the Loukkos River, blending Moroccan and Spanish influences into a character entirely its own. The medina perches above the river and harbor, its whitewashed streets decorated with blue trim reminiscent of Andalusian villages. The 17th-century Kasbah de la Cigogne commands views over the Atlantic, and the Place de la Liberation — lined with Spanish-era cafes — is the social heart of the town.
Just 4 km north lies Lixus, one of the most important archaeological sites in Morocco. This ancient Phoenician, Roman, and Berber settlement overlooks the Loukkos River and features a partially restored amphitheater, bathhouses, and mosaics. The beach at Ras R'mel, a sandy spit across the river, is popular in summer.
Larache is also the final resting place of French writer Jean Genet, who chose this unassuming town to be buried in its Catholic cemetery overlooking the sea.
