About Moulay Idriss Zerhoun
Moulay Idriss Zerhoun cascades down two hills around the tomb of Moulay Idriss I, the great-grandson of Prophet Muhammad who brought Islam to Morocco in 789 AD. For centuries, five visits to this town was considered equivalent to one hajj to Mecca, and non-Muslims were forbidden from staying overnight until 2005.
Today, the town offers a deeply spiritual atmosphere, stunning hilltop views over the surrounding olive groves and Volubilis ruins, and an authenticity that few Moroccan towns can match. The annual moussem (pilgrimage festival) in August attracts thousands of devotees.
