2 Days in Essaouira: The Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Get to Essaouira early — if you drove the three hours from Marrakech, you should be here by mid-morning. Drop your bags at your riad, then head straight for the Skala de la Ville, the 18th-century sea bastion that runs along the northern edge of the medina. The cannon-lined platform faces directly into the Atlantic; the spray hits you before you even see the water. Walk the full length westward to the Skala du Port, about 800 metres of wall, and you have already seen Essaouira's defining image.

Essaouira's medina is UNESCO-listed and refreshingly calm by Moroccan standards — no motorbikes, no hard sell, no warren of dead ends that makes Fes so disorienting. The layout is a French-influenced grid, so you won't truly lose yourself, but the covered woodwork souks along Rue Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah are genuinely absorbing. Thuya wood — a resinous local root burl — gets turned into furniture, chess sets, and frames here. Prices are fair enough that you usually don't need to haggle hard.

Walk through the blue gate into the working harbour, where the catch comes in before 10 am and goes straight onto charcoal grills by noon. The stalls along the port entrance are not tourist traps — local fishermen eat here too. A full plate of sardines, calamari, and a piece of whatever the boats brought in that morning runs from 50–90 MAD (indicative), including bread and harissa. Eat standing up at one of the stall tables; that is the correct way to do it.

Essaouira has had a functioning artist colony since the 1960s. Galerie Simon (also called Galerie Damgaard in older guides — look for the blue door near the central avenue) shows work by self-taught Gnawa painters whose swirling, trance-inspired canvases are unlike anything in Marrakech's galleries. Around the medina's main square, Mohammed ben Messaoud, Gnawa musicians in blue robes set up in the late afternoon. The music is hypnotic and entirely genuine — this is a living tradition, not a performance staged for tourists.

Return to the Skala de la Ville around 6 pm, an hour before sunset. The light turns the stone warm gold and the Atlantic goes deep violet. For dinner, aim for one of the riad restaurants on Rue Laalouj or around the main square — slow-cooked fish tagine with preserved lemon is the local move. Budget 150–250 MAD per person for a proper sit-down meal with mint tea.

Essaouira's beach stretches three kilometres south of town, wide and flat and permanently windswept. The Alizé trade wind that made this port so important in the 17th century now makes it one of the world's top kitesurfing destinations. Even if you are not here to kite, the morning beach walk is remarkable — you can see riders launching from the sand at the far south end, and horses available for hire at around 100–150 MAD per hour for a beach canter (indicative). The water is cold year-round (17–22°C), but the beach itself is magnificent.

Back in the medina, Place Moulay Hassan is Essaouira's central square and a useful orientation point. The Jewish quarter (mellah) lies just to the north, marked by carved wooden balconies and the old synagogue on Rue Simon Deutch — now a heritage site open to visitors. The community that built this neighbourhood traded across the Atlantic, and at its peak Essaouira had one of Morocco's most prosperous Jewish merchant populations. The architecture tells that story quietly if you walk slowly enough.

The coastal road south of Essaouira passes several women's argan oil cooperatives — not tourist gift shops but actual processing facilities where you can watch the hand-grinding process and buy cold-pressed oil at source. The price is around 80–120 MAD for a 100 ml bottle (indicative; significantly cheaper than supermarkets back home). Allow 45 minutes for this stop. If you have a private driver for the Marrakech–Essaouira leg, they will know which cooperatives are the genuine article. After that, the drive back winds through argan groves where you'll sometimes spot goats climbing into the trees — not staged; they do this naturally for the fruit.
