3 Days in Ouarzazate

Head west to Ait Benhaddou — the most spectacular ksar (fortified village) in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The drive through the desert landscape takes 30 minutes. A private driver for the Day 2 loop (Ait Benhaddou + Telouet) is the best option.

The iconic mud-brick ksar rising from the riverbed. This UNESCO site has appeared in Gladiator (as the gladiator training school), Game of Thrones (as Yunkai), Lawrence of Arabia, and many more. Cross the river (stepping stones or the bridge), walk up through the tightly-packed houses, and climb to the granary at the top for panoramic views.

Drive 1 hour northwest to the Glaoui Kasbah at Telouet — Morocco's most atmospheric ruin. This was the stronghold of the Glaoui dynasty, once the most powerful family in southern Morocco. The reception rooms have intact painted ceilings, zellige, and carved plaster — a palace abandoned to the elements since 1956.

Eat at one of the simple restaurants near the kasbah. Berber tagine, fresh bread, and mint tea in a mountain setting. The food is simple and satisfying after the emotional weight of the kasbah ruins.

Return to Ouarzazate via the stunning Ounila Valley road (the old salt route). The route passes through red gorges, Berber villages, and kasbah ruins clinging to hillsides. This is one of Morocco's most scenic drives — dramatic, remote, and beautiful.

Stop at the reservoir on the outskirts of Ouarzazate. The artificial lake is a striking patch of blue in the desert landscape. The dam provides water and electricity to the region. Flamingos sometimes visit the shallows.

Rest at your accommodation and dine. Day 2 is the most spectacular of your 3 days. The combination of Ait Benhaddou, Telouet, and the Ounila Valley is one of the great day trips in Morocco.

Head east to the Skoura palm groves — one of Morocco's largest oases, with over 700,000 palm trees. The 42 km drive through the desert passes small towns and kasbahs. The sudden appearance of the green palm grove against the barren landscape is dramatic.

The best-preserved kasbah in the Skoura palm grove. Still partially inhabited by the founding family, it appears on the 50-dirham banknote. The rooms have traditional furnishings, and the tower offers views over the palm grove and the Atlas Mountains.

Walk or rent a bike to explore the palm grove. Irrigation channels, small farms, rose gardens, and crumbling kasbahs dot the landscape. The shade of the palms, the sound of water, and the birdsong create a peaceful desert oasis. Local kids may offer to guide you for a small tip.

Many guesthouses in the palm grove welcome non-guests for lunch. Eat on a terrace shaded by palms — tagine, salads, fresh bread, and dates straight from the trees. The pace of life here is impossibly slow and deeply relaxing.

Continue east to the Valley of the Roses — famous for the Damascene roses grown here and harvested in May. The rose water distilleries operate year-round, and the cooperative shops sell rose water, rose cream, and rose oil at source prices. Even outside May, the valley is beautiful.

Return to Ouarzazate through the Dades Valley — kasbahs, gorges, and the High Atlas rising behind. The drive is scenic throughout, especially in late afternoon light.

End your 3 days with a final desert sunset. Three days in Ouarzazate reveals Morocco's most cinematic landscape — film sets, UNESCO kasbahs, palm oases, rose valleys, and the vast emptiness of the pre-Saharan desert. This region is Morocco at its most dramatic.
