The Todra Gorge, 30 km east, is the more famous of the two but the Dades is less visited and arguably more dramatic on the approach.

Five days adds the Skoura palm grove and turns the return into a more leisurely journey or allows you to finish in Fes. The route runs: Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou (70 km south-east of Ouarzazate) → Ouarzazate → Boumalne Dades → Dades Gorge → Todra Gorge near Tinghir → Erfoud → Rissani → Merzouga. Distances are long but the road is paved throughout. The Tizi n'Tichka pass (N9) and then the N10 east form the spine of the route, passing through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs as you approach the pre-desert.

They are distinct gorges about 30 km apart. The Todra Gorge is a narrow slot canyon — 300-metre walls closing to just 10 metres — best explored on foot and most dramatic at its tightest point. The Dades Gorge is wider and more open, with a winding road through eroded rock towers and a village-dotted valley floor; it is better appreciated from the car or a viewpoint above the river bend. October to April offers the most comfortable conditions across all three environments you pass through: the Atlas is clear (though snow can close Tizi n'Tichka briefly in January), the gorges are cool and green from winter rains, and desert nights are cold but not unbearably so. March–April and October–November are the prime windows. Avoid mid-summer if possible — the Sahara can hit 45°C in July and August, turning the gorge walks and camel trek into an endurance test rather than a pleasure.
