Most climbers sleep in Imlil on night one, then walk to the CAF Refuge at 3,207 m on day two and attempt the summit on day three before descending. If you are fit and have time, spending two nights in Imlil — one acclimatising, one resting after the summit — makes the experience far more enjoyable and reduces the risk of altitude headaches on the summit push. Book the refuge dorm as early as possible, especially for weekends from April through October when it fills weeks in advance.

The main high-altitude hut is the CAF Refuge du Toubkal at 3,207 m, about 4–5 hours walk from Imlil via Aroumd and Sidi Chamharouch. There is a simple bivouac shelter at Sidi Chamharouch (2,310 m) — a small Berber shrine with a tea stall — but it is not a proper guesthouse. Between Imlil and the refuge, the only overnight option is Aroumd village at 1,900 m.

Kasbah du Toubkal is the most celebrated — a restored caïd's kasbah with views in every direction, ensuite rooms, and a roof terrace where you can watch sunset hit the summit. It is also the most expensive. For a more budget-conscious option, the family-run guesthouses clustered around Imlil square offer hearty food, wool blankets, and local guides at half the price. If you want to be a step closer to the summit and away from the drop-off vehicles, walk 45 minutes up to Aroumd.

In Imlil and Aroumd, almost every guesthouse offers half-board (dinner and breakfast), typically a tajine or couscous, mint tea, and bread. Hot showers exist in all but the most basic places, though pressure can be modest. At the CAF Refuge (3,207 m), there is no hot shower — just cold tap water and a basic toilet block. Pack a quick-dry towel and a headtorch regardless of which tier you stay at. The refuge does serve a simple hot dinner and a thermos of coffee before the pre-dawn summit start.

The most reliable route is a private car or taxi from Marrakech (around 1.5–2 hours, 65 km via the N9 and then the road through Asni). Shared grand taxis leave from the Bab Rob taxi stand in Marrakech to Asni (around 25–35 MAD per seat), where you pick up another shared taxi for the final 17 km climb to Imlil. This takes 3–4 hours in total with the changes. A private driver is the easiest and most flexible option, especially if you have luggage or a tight timeline.

Imlil is very safe for solo travellers of any gender. The main risk is the mountain itself, not the village. For hiking, bring layers — temperatures drop sharply after 2,500 m even in summer — plus sunscreen, a hat, solid ankle-support boots, at least 2 litres of water per day (refill at the refuge), and energy snacks. A licensed guide is not legally required but is strongly recommended above the refuge; trail conditions change and route-finding in poor visibility above 3,500 m is genuinely hazardous without local knowledge.

A day trip to Imlil from Marrakech is possible and popular — the drive takes under two hours each way, leaving plenty of time to walk into the Berber village, have lunch on a terrace, and explore the valley paths below Aroumd. However, for the Toubkal summit you need at least two nights minimum (one in Imlil or Aroumd, one at the CAF Refuge). Day trippers miss the magic of an Atlas mountain dawn: the walk to the top of the valley in the hour after sunrise, before the mule convoys begin, is the most atmospheric time to be there.
