The best riads in Chefchaouen are inside the medina walls — full stop. Unlike Marrakech, where modern hotels in Gueliz offer a practical alternative, Chefchaouen’s appeal is entirely bound up in its blue-painted labyrinth of alleys, geranium-filled window boxes, and the green Rif Mountains rising behind the rooftops. Stay outside that medina and you are staying in a different town.
The good news is that Chefchaouen riads run considerably cheaper than their Marrakech equivalents. A mid-range riad with a mountain-view terrace and included breakfast costs 400–750 MAD per night (indicative; roughly $40–75) — less than many European budget hotels. The catch is that the best ones fill up fast in April, May, September and October, when Instagram-armed visitors descend and the blue walls get their most flattering light.
Below you will find three tiers of pick — splurge boutique, solid mid-range, and genuine budget — followed by practical booking advice, a comparison of medina neighbourhoods, and answers to the questions that come up most often.
