The High Atlas is a vertical world where the season that suits you depends entirely on altitude and activity. The same month that offers gentle valley walks near Marrakech can mean full winter mountaineering on Toubkal, or a short ski season at Oukaimeden. This guide times it all by month and by elevation, for trekkers, skiers and day-trippers alike. For the national overview, see the best time to visit Morocco guide.

Unlike a city break, there is no single best time for the Atlas, because the mountains span everything from warm valleys near 1,000m to a 4,167m summit. The most versatile window is spring, roughly April and May, when the valleys are green and flower-strewn, the streams run full with snowmelt, and the high peaks still wear snow for a dramatic backdrop, all while lower trekking is comfortable. Autumn is a close second for stable, clear trekking weather.
Beyond that, match the month to the goal. Summer is the standard season for reaching the Toubkal summit without technical gear and for escaping the city heat in high valleys. Winter turns the same peaks into a crampons-and-ice-axe proposition and opens the brief Oukaimeden ski season. Day-trippers from Marrakech can enjoy the foothills almost year-round. Decide what you want to do first, then pick the season.
The grid below uses a mid-mountain reference point, the trekking village of Imlil at about 1,740m, which is the base for Toubkal and a fair proxy for the popular valleys. Remember the lapse rate: temperatures fall roughly 6-7C for every 1,000m you climb, so conditions on the high peaks are far colder than these figures, and the summit is snow-covered from around November to May.
The activity column shows what each month is realistically best for. The pattern is clear: a long, warm trekking and valley season from spring through autumn, bracketed by a cold, snowy winter that rewards skiers and experienced mountaineers but shuts down casual high-altitude walking.
| Month | Valley high C | Valley low C | High peaks | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 9 | 1 | Deep snow | Skiing, snowshoeing, valley days |
| February | 10 | 2 | Deep snow | Skiing, winter climbing |
| March | 13 | 4 | Snow easing | Winter climbing, late skiing |
| April | 16 | 6 | Snow on tops | Valley walks, wildflowers, lower treks |
| May | 20 | 9 | Melting snowline | All-round: treks, flowers, green valleys |
| June | 25 | 13 | Mostly clear | Toubkal ascents, high treks |
| July | 29 | 16 | Clear | Summit treks, heat escapes at altitude |
| August | 29 | 16 | Clear | Summit treks, afternoon storms possible |
| September | 25 | 13 | Clear | Prime trekking, stable weather |
| October | 20 | 9 | First snows late | Excellent trekking, autumn colour |
| November | 14 | 5 | Snow returning | Lower treks, valley days |
| December | 10 | 2 | Snow building | Valley days, early ski season |
The single most useful way to plan an Atlas trip is to think in altitude bands, because the same date feels completely different at 1,200m and at 4,000m. The table maps the year across three broad levels: the lower valleys and foothills, the mid-mountain zone that includes Oukaimeden, and the high peaks. Use it to sanity-check any plan against the season.
For a valley day trip from Marrakech, such as the Ourika Valley or the Setti Fatma waterfalls, the lower band is your reference and the window is wide. For a Toubkal summit push, the high-peaks row governs your gear and skills. Our which Atlas day trip from Marrakech guide helps match a foothills outing to the season.
| Altitude band | Winter | Spring | Summer | Autumn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valleys ~1,000-1,800m | Cool, some snow, green after rain | Green, flowers, streams full | Hot midday, cool nights | Mild, clear, colour |
| Mid ~2,000-2,600m (Oukaimeden) | Snow, ski season | Melting, muddy, greening | Warm days, cool nights | Crisp, stable |
| High peaks 3,000m+ | Deep snow, technical | Snowline retreating | Clear, best summit window | Clear then first snows |
Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167m the highest peak in North Africa, is the region's headline trek, and its season splits sharply. From roughly April to October the standard two-day route via the mountain refuges is a strenuous but non-technical hike, with the most reliable, snow-free conditions from June to September. This is when most trekkers come, and guides are required within the national park, so plan for that. Our Mount Toubkal trek guide has the route detail.
From around December to March, Toubkal becomes a winter mountaineering objective. Snow and ice on the upper slopes mean crampons, an ice axe and the skills to use them are essential, and the risk of avalanche and severe cold rises significantly. It is a rewarding winter climb for the experienced and properly equipped, but it is emphatically not a casual hike. If you lack winter skills, either go with a qualified mountain guide or choose the summer season instead.
Oukaimeden, at around 2,600-3,200m and roughly an hour and a half from Marrakech, is Africa's highest ski resort and a genuine novelty: skiing within sight of the desert's edge. But temper expectations. The season is short and entirely snow-dependent, typically running from January into early March in a good year, with limited lifts and variable cover. In a poor snow year it can be thin or barely operational.
Beyond the pistes, winter in the Atlas has quieter pleasures. The lower valleys can be crisp and green after rain, snowshoeing and winter walking open up at mid-altitude, and the snow-capped peaks make a stunning backdrop for day trips from the city. Just come prepared for cold, short days and the chance that mountain roads and passes close temporarily after heavy snow. Our Oukaimeden skiing guide covers gear hire and access.
For many visitors the loveliest Atlas experience needs no summit at all. In spring, the valleys and lower slopes erupt with wildflowers and blossom, the streams run hard with snowmelt, and the terraced Berber villages sit amid the greenest scenery of the year. The flowering rolls uphill as the season advances, starting lower in April and reaching higher meadows by May and June, so there is a long window to catch it somewhere.
This is the ideal time for gentle walks, mule rides and family outings, and for waterfall trips such as the Setti Fatma cascades, covered in our Setti Fatma and Ourika waterfalls guide. Many day-trippers combine a morning in the foothills with lunch in a valley village before heading back to the city, where you can round off the day over dinner from Marrakech's restaurants. Spring's mix of accessibility and beauty is why it tops most all-round recommendations.
Because the Atlas spans such extremes, the right gear is season and altitude specific. The table summarises the essentials; the golden rule is to plan for the conditions at your highest point, not the valley you start from, and to build in flexibility for fast-changing mountain weather.
| Season | Key gear | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (Dec-Mar) | Crampons, ice axe, warm and waterproof layers (high peaks); warm clothing for valleys | Snow, cold, short days, possible road closures |
| Spring (Apr-May) | Layers, waterproofs, sturdy boots, sun protection | Muddy trails, full streams, snow on tops |
| Summer (Jun-Aug) | Sun protection, plenty of water, light layers, warm layer for altitude | Hot low valleys, afternoon storms high up |
| Autumn (Sep-Oct) | Layers, waterproofs, warm evening kit | Cooling nights, first high snows late on |
For summit treks such as Toubkal, the standard season is April to October, with June to September the most reliable for snow-free, stable conditions. For an all-round mountain experience combining green valleys, wildflowers and snow-capped peaks, spring, especially May, is the highlight. Autumn also offers excellent, stable trekking after the summer heat. Winter treks on the high peaks require mountaineering skills and equipment.
Yes, but it becomes a serious winter mountaineering objective from roughly December to March, not a casual hike. Snow and ice on the upper slopes require crampons, an ice axe and the experience to use them, and cold and avalanche risk are real. If you do not have winter skills, go with a qualified mountain guide or wait for the April-to-October season. Guides are required in the national park regardless.
The Oukaimeden ski season is short and snow-dependent, typically running from January into early March in a good year. As Africa's highest ski resort, at around 2,600-3,200m, it offers a novel experience but limited lifts and variable snow cover, and a poor snow year can leave it thin. Check current conditions before travelling, and treat skiing as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
Spring is the wildflower season, with the display starting lower in the valleys in April and moving uphill to higher meadows by May and June as the snow retreats. This is also when streams run full with snowmelt and the valleys are at their greenest, making it the loveliest time for gentle walks, mule rides and photography. A wet winter tends to produce a more spectacular spring bloom.
Yes. In summer, when Marrakech regularly climbs into the high 30s, the higher Atlas valleys are noticeably cooler, and nights at altitude can be pleasantly cool even in July and August. Villages like Imlil and Ouirgane make refreshing day trips or overnight escapes from the city heat. Just note that the lower valleys are still hot at midday, so plan walks for the morning.
They can. After heavy snowfall, high passes and roads to places like Oukaimeden or over the main Atlas passes may close temporarily until they are cleared. This is usually short-lived, but winter travellers should build in flexibility, check conditions locally, and not assume a fixed schedule for high-altitude routes. Lower valley roads are rarely affected, so foothill day trips from Marrakech remain reliable most of the winter.
Autumn, particularly September and October, is one of the best times for trekking. The summer heat has eased, the weather is stable and clear, and the first winter snows usually hold off until late in the period, giving a long window of excellent walking conditions. Crowds are thinner than in summer, and the light and autumn colour in the valleys are a bonus. Pack warm layers for the cool nights.
Temperature falls roughly 6-7C for every 1,000m you climb, so Toubkal's 4,167m summit is around 15-16C colder than a valley base near 1,700m, before wind chill. That means a warm spring afternoon in Imlil can coincide with freezing, windy conditions on the summit ridge. Always carry warm and windproof layers sized for your highest point, not the conditions where you start.
