Chefchaouen’s old medina is genuinely, absurdly blue — not a filter, not a renovation for tourists, but a living neighbourhood that has been painted in indigo, cornflower and powder-blue for generations. The walls, stairs, flowerpots, doorways, even the cat bowls: all blue. Standing inside a narrow alley at dawn when the first light slides between the buildings feels like being submerged.
It is also one of the most Instagrammed places in Morocco, which means timing matters. Arrive with the tour buses (around 10:30) and you will photograph other people’s backs. Arrive before 08:00 and the city belongs to you, the swallows, and a few locals taking the long way to the bread oven. This guide gives you the specific streets, the exact viewpoints, the best light windows, and the logistics to actually use them.
