About Errachidia
Errachidia (formerly Ksar es-Souk) is the administrative capital of the Draa-Tafilalet region and the main urban center on the route between Fes and the Saharan dunes of Merzouga. The city itself is a functional, modern Moroccan town built around a French Foreign Legion garrison, but its surroundings are spectacular. The Ziz Gorge, north of the city, is a dramatic canyon where the river has carved through red limestone over millennia, creating a winding oasis lined with date palms and dotted with fortified ksour (mud-brick villages).
The Tunnel du Légionnaire, blasted through rock by the French in the 1930s, marks the entrance to the gorge. South of the city, the Ziz Valley opens into the vast Tafilalet palm grove — the largest oasis in Morocco with over a million date palms. The Source Bleue de Meski, a natural spring feeding a blue pool shaded by palms, is a popular swimming stop.
Errachidia is best experienced as a base for exploring the surrounding valleys, gorges, and the road south to the Sahara.
