Qarawiyyin Area (Heart of the Medina)
The intellectual and religious core — go here first.
The area around the Qarawiyyin mosque and university is the oldest continuously functioning university district on earth, founded in 859 AD. The mosque itself is closed to non-Muslims, but the square outside hums with students, and the neighbouring Bou Inania medersa (open to visitors, entry around 20 MAD) lets you see the carved cedar and stucco craftsmanship that defines Fasi architecture. The Al-Attarine souks — spice, leather, metalwork — branch off from here in every direction.
