5-Day Desert Tour: Fes to Marrakech

You leave Fes through the city's crumbling Marinid walls and climb into the Middle Atlas almost immediately. Ifrane — improbably European-looking, with red-roofed chalets and a resident population of Barbary macaques in the nearby cedar forests around Azrou — makes a good first stop for coffee and a walk. From there the road drops through Midelt and the apple orchards of the Moulouya Valley before the landscape hardens into hammada as you approach Errachidia. By late afternoon the red sand of Erg Chebbi appears on the horizon: the dunes rise to around 150 metres, dramatically abrupt from the flat desert floor.

This is the Sahara day — give it the time it deserves. Rise before light and climb a dune crest for the sunrise: the colours shift from purple to orange to blinding gold in about fifteen minutes, and the silence is total except for wind over sand. Breakfast back at camp, then a rest through the midday heat. The afternoon options are quad-biking the dune corridors, a visit to a Gnawa music session in a nearby village, or simply watching the light change from the top of a dune as the shadows lengthen. A second camel ride into the dunes for sunset is worth it even if you did one the night before — the western light is different.

Leaving the dunes behind, the road runs west through Rissani — where the Alaouite dynasty was founded — and Erfoud, famous for its ammonite-studded fossils. At Tinghir you turn north into the Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls squeeze to around eight metres apart and rise 300 metres above a clear river. You can walk the gorge floor in under an hour; the light is extraordinary in the early afternoon when it hits directly. Continue west along the Route des Kasbahs through the Dades Valley for the night, where mudbrick towers line the valley against the jagged Anti-Atlas above.

A shorter driving day that lets you linger. The Dades Gorge itself — upstream from the valley where you slept — deserves an early morning walk before you leave: the sculpted rock formations are nicknamed the "monkey fingers" for obvious reasons. Ouarzazate is worth a stop for its film studios (Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones all shot here) before the short drive to Aït Benhaddou, the most famous earthen ksar in Morocco. Climb to the granary at the top of the ksar for the view back across the dry Ounila River. Overnight in Ouarzazate or in a guesthouse below the ksar.

The final leg crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres — the highest paved road in Morocco. The switchbacks are dramatic and the views back towards the Sahara side are genuinely cinematic on a clear day. Several Berber villages cling to the slopes en route; the roadside stalls sell fossils, minerals and thuya wood carvings. The pass descends into the Haouz plain and Marrakech appears in the distance, its palms breaking the flatness. You arrive in the early afternoon, in time to drop luggage and walk to Jemaa el-Fna before dark.
