The Blue City is small — you can walk its entire medina in an afternoon — but it is at its most magical in the early morning and at dusk, which means you want at least one night. Arrive by mid-afternoon, explore through the golden hour, then have the medina almost to yourself the following morning before the day-trippers arrive from Fes around 10 am. A second night extends the experience without adding much more to see, unless you plan to hike in the Rif Mountains.

Seven days is the bare minimum for a meaningful trip combining two or three cities. Ten days lets you add the Sahara or the north coast without feeling rushed. Fourteen days is the magic number for first-time visitors who want the imperial cities (Marrakech, Fes, Rabat, Meknes), Chefchaouen, Essaouira and a night in the desert. Morocco rewards slow travel; every extra day pays dividends. If you only have a week, pick one region — either the south (Marrakech plus the desert) or the north (Fes, Chefchaouen, Tangier) — and do it properly.

Marrakech if this is your first Morocco trip — it is more accessible, the food scene is exceptional, the day-trip options are vast, and the nightlife is livelier. Fes if you are a returning visitor or if medieval history and crafts matter more than convenience — it is harder to navigate but more authentically medieval. Most itineraries spend one extra day in Marrakech simply because it is easier to fill time there. If you genuinely want to understand Moroccan culture at depth, Fes gives you more per day.

Marrakech–Fes is the most popular combination and works well on a 7-day trip: three nights in Marrakech, one travel day (fly or use the overnight train), and three nights in Fes. Adding Chefchaouen to this circuit is possible but makes the schedule tight — Chefchaouen is three hours from Fes by shared taxi or CTM bus, so it works as a detour rather than a loop. Avoid trying to squeeze Tangier, Casablanca and Essaouira into the same week; you will spend more time on buses than in medinas.

The classic anti-clockwise circuit works: fly into Marrakech, head south to the Sahara, then north to Fes, across to Chefchaouen, and out through Tangier. This avoids backtracking and follows the natural geography of the country. The alternative — Casablanca arrival, north to Tangier and Chefchaouen, then Fes, then Marrakech — suits travellers arriving by ferry from Spain or flying via Casablanca. Whichever direction you choose, private transport between cities is far more flexible than buses and costs a fraction of what it would in Europe.
