Accommodation is the biggest variable. Hostel dorms in Fes or Marrakech run from 80–150 MAD. A decent private room in a guesthouse is 200–350 MAD. A genuinely lovely riad — tiled courtyard, morning breakfast, attentive staff — starts at around 400 MAD and climbs to 1,500+ MAD for the polished boutique options that show up in design magazines. If you care about where you sleep, budget accordingly; the gap between budget and mid-range sleep is the single biggest jump in weekly cost.
Food is remarkably cheap if you eat local. The medinas are full of proper, affordable food: harira soup, msemen flatbreads stuffed with herbs and egg, freshly grilled brochettes, bowl after bowl of couscous. The tourist trap is the ring of restaurants around Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakech, where a tagine can cost four times what it would fifty metres deeper in the medina. Follow the rule that if a menu is in English only and has photos, walk another two streets.
Intercity transport is cheap on buses, expensive by taxi if you are not careful. CTM and Supratours buses between major cities are very affordable and reliable. The Marrakech–Essaouira bus is around 100 MAD; Marrakech–Fes around 150 MAD. Petits taxis within cities should be metered — insist, or agree a fare before you get in. Grand taxis for intercity hops work on a shared basis and leave when full, which can mean a wait. For desert routes or multi-stop days, a private driver-guide bundles cost, comfort and local knowledge into one reasonable package.
Experiences can add up quickly. Most major sights charge 20–70 MAD entry. A cooking class runs 400–700 MAD. A hammam visit costs 60–200 MAD depending on whether it is a neighbourhood bath or a polished tourist spa. A guided tour through a medina runs 200–350 MAD. None of these is expensive individually, but if you pack in three activities a day you will notice it by day four. The upside: a private guided tour that includes most of these in a package rate often ends up cheaper than booking each one separately, and you avoid the hassle of negotiating prices individually.
