Candlelit Dinner on the Sahara Dunes
Erg Chebbi, Merzouga
A low table set directly on the sand, hurricane lanterns casting gold light across the dunes, and a sky so thick with stars it looks painted — this is the most dramatic private dinner Morocco offers. Camps near Merzouga arrange them on request: a cook carries tajines, harira, and pastilla out to a spot half a kilometre into the dunes, away from other guests. The silence is complete except for the occasional creak of a camel rope. Dinners typically run two to three hours and wrap up before the desert cold really bites around midnight.
