October is many people's favourite month in Marrakech, and the crowds prove it: warm sunny 28C afternoons, mild 15C nights, long comfortable days for all-day sightseeing, and the summer heat gone. It is also one of the two busiest and most expensive months of the year alongside April, so book ahead. This is a single-month deep dive on the near-ideal weather, the crowds by week, the film-festival build and what to pack. October is, for many travellers, the perfect Marrakech month, and the weather is the reason. The fierce summer heat has broken but true warmth remains: afternoon highs sit around 26-30C, warmer in the first week and easing to the mid-20s by late month, with roughly eight hours of sun and mostly clear skies. Nights are mild at 14-16C, comfortable for rooftop dinners with only a light layer, and the deep chill of winter is still weeks away. This is the sweet spot where you can sightsee from morning to evening without either a heat penalty or a cold snap, which is precisely why October is so popular.
Rain makes a modest return after the dry summer, at around 24mm over about five days, usually as short showers rather than sustained rain, so a light waterproof joins the sun cream in the bag. The days are shortening, from about 11h35m of daylight early in the month to 10h55m by the end, with sunset drawing back toward 6:15pm by late October, so the long summer evenings are contracting and it pays to start open-air sightseeing a little earlier in the day. Overall, though, October is as close to fault-free as the Marrakech weather gets.
| Period | Avg high C | Avg low C | Rain days | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Oct (1-10) | 30 | 16 | 1 | ~11h 35m |
| Mid Oct (11-20) | 28 | 15 | 1-2 | ~11h 15m |
| Late Oct (21-31) | 26 | 14 | 2 | ~10h 55m |
| Month overall | 28 | 15 | ~5 | warm, cooling gently |
October's near-ideal weather comes with a clear cost: it is one of the two busiest and most expensive months of the Marrakech year, matching April. The comfortable conditions draw heavy demand for riads, popular restaurants and day trips, and room rates sit at or near their annual peak throughout the month. Expect the medina, gardens and Jemaa el-Fnaa to be busy, queues at the headline sights, and the best riads and tables booked out well in advance. Unlike April, October's demand is spread fairly evenly across the month rather than concentrated on a single holiday, so there is no obvious quiet week to target.
The practical response is to book early, weeks ahead for accommodation and any bucket-list restaurant, and to consider timed entries or guided visits for the busiest sights. If you value the weather above all and are happy to plan around the crowds, October rewards you; if you want the same warmth with fewer people and lower prices, the second half of September or November are the natural alternatives on either side. For a fuller cost breakdown across the year, see our Marrakech prices and costs guide.
| Window | Crowds | Room rates vs low season | Advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Oct | High | 50-80% above low season | Warmest; book weeks ahead |
| Mid Oct | Peak | 60-90% above | Busiest; reserve restaurants early |
| Late Oct | High | 50-70% above | Cooler, still busy |
| Month overall | Peak (with April) | At or near annual high | No obvious quiet week; plan ahead |
October carries a sense of anticipation rather than a single headline event. The Marrakech International Film Festival, the city's glamorous cinema showcase with red-carpet premieres, tributes and free public screenings on Jemaa el-Fnaa, takes place in late November, so October is when the build-up begins, programme announcements, industry chatter and the first signs of the machinery around it. If your heart is set on the festival itself, you want late November, not October; but October's cultural life is lively in its own right, with galleries, museums and the general autumn buzz of a city at full tilt.
The near-ideal weather also makes October the best month of the year for a first Atlas day trip or foothills walk, with comfortable temperatures at altitude and the valleys past their summer dryness. It is an excellent month to combine the full city programme, gardens, palaces, souks, rooftops, with a day out in the mountains. See our Marrakech International Film Festival guide for the festival detail, and the three valleys day trip for a classic autumn foothills outing.
October is the easy month: the daily temperature curve is gentle, so there is no fierce midday to avoid and no cold night to dress heavily for. You can genuinely sightsee across the whole day, though early October afternoons are warm enough to appreciate a shaded lunch or a garden pause at the hottest point, and the shortening evenings mean the golden hour and sunset come earlier than in summer. It is the least constrained month for planning, which is a large part of its appeal.
The table below sketches how a clear mid-October day tends to feel. Compared with the extremes of December's cold or June's heat, October's curve is remarkably flat and forgiving, warm and pleasant almost throughout, with only a mild cool-down after dark.
| Time | Approx temp C | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-9am | 15-18 | Fresh, pleasant | Gardens, medina before the crowds |
| 11am-1pm | 24-27 | Warm, bright | Souks, sights, walking tours |
| 1-4pm | 27-29 | Warmest, light shade welcome | Shaded lunch, garden break, pool early Oct |
| 4-6pm | 24-26 | Warm, golden light | Rooftops, palaces, photography |
| After 7pm | 16-19 | Mild, comfortable | Dinner outdoors, Jemaa el-Fnaa |
October's near-ideal weather makes it the best month of the year for getting out of the city and into the mountains, and a day trip is a strong addition to an autumn stay. The foothills have shed the summer dryness, temperatures at altitude are comfortable for walking, and the light is superb for photography before winter closes in on the high routes. It is the ideal window for a first taste of the Atlas without either summer heat in the valleys or deep snow on the passes.
The Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma make an easy half-to-full-day out with waterfalls and riverside cafes; the Three Valleys route pairs Ourika with Asni and the Kik Plateau for a fuller day of Berber-village scenery; and Imlil is the gateway for foothill walks beneath Toubkal. Late in the month the highest peaks may catch their first snow, adding a dramatic backdrop to a valley day. The table below compares the main October options.
| Day trip | Distance / time | October suitability | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ourika Valley / Setti Fatma | ~65km / 1.5 hrs | Excellent | Waterfalls, riverside lunch, easy walking |
| Three Valleys | Full-day loop | Excellent | Ourika, Asni, Kik Plateau; Berber villages |
| Imlil / High Atlas foothills | ~65km / 1.5 hrs | Excellent | Foothill walks; first snow possible late Oct |
| Agafay desert | ~40km / 45 min | Very good | Comfortable by day; cooler at dusk |
October is a do-everything month, and the near-ideal weather suits the full Marrakech spread with none of the seasonal constraints: gardens, palaces and museums, the souks, medina walking routes, rooftop dining, and an Atlas day trip in the best foothills-walking conditions of the year. Early October pools are still warm enough to enjoy; by late month a pool becomes a nice-to-have rather than a highlight. Because it is peak season, pre-book the popular restaurants, hammams and day trips.
Packing spans warm days and mild-to-cool evenings, with the return of a little rain to plan for. You want warm-weather daytime clothing plus a proper evening layer, which becomes more useful as the month cools.
October has arguably the best all-round weather of the year, warm sunny days around 26-30C and mild 14-16C nights, comfortable for sightseeing from morning to evening. The trade-off is that it is one of the two busiest and most expensive months, alongside April, so crowds are heavy and room rates are near their annual peak. If you book well ahead and are happy to plan around the crowds, it is superb.
Pleasantly warm and easing through the month. Early October afternoons sit around 30C, cooling to the mid-20s by late month, with mild nights of 14-16C. There is about eight hours of sun a day and a modest return of rain, roughly 24mm over five days of short showers. It is the sweet spot where you avoid both summer heat and winter cold.
Yes, it is one of the two peak months of the year, matching April. The near-ideal weather drives heavy demand for riads, restaurants and day trips, with room rates at or near their annual high. Unlike April, the demand is spread fairly evenly across the month rather than around a single holiday, so there is no obvious quiet week to target, book weeks ahead.
Early October pools are still warm enough to enjoy after the hot summer, so a pool riad remains worthwhile in the first half of the month. By late October the cooler afternoons make a pool more of a nice-to-have than a highlight. If a pool day matters to you, favour the first ten days or so of the month.
No, the Marrakech International Film Festival takes place in late November, not October, so October is the build-up period with programme announcements and anticipation rather than the event itself. If you want to attend the festival, plan for late November. October still has plenty of cultural life through its galleries, museums and general autumn buzz.
Warm-weather daytime clothing, T-shirts, shirts, light trousers and dresses, plus a jumper or light jacket for the mild evenings, which are cooler late in the month. Bring comfortable closed shoes and sandals, swimwear for early-October pools, sunglasses, a hat and sun cream, and a light waterproof for the returning autumn showers. Keep some modest, breathable clothing for the souks and religious sites.
