Days 1–3
Fes
Ancient medina & artisan quarter
Arrive in Fes and check into a riad in the medina — rooms in the old city start from around 800 MAD a night and rise steeply for heritage properties with plunge pools and rooftop terraces. Three days here is not excessive. The Chouara tanneries are best seen from the balconies of leather shops at mid-morning; the Bou Inania madrasa is quietest at opening time. For a romantic evening, ask your riad to arrange a private dinner on the terrace with a view of the illuminated minarets.
- Stay inside the medina walls, not the Ville Nouvelle
- Hire a local guide for the first morning — the souks are deliberately labyrinthine
- The pottery district (Ain Khendek) is a 20-minute walk and worth the morning
