Where to Go in October
October rewards almost every part of Morocco, but some destinations shine particularly bright in autumn. The Dades and Todra Gorges are at their most photogenic: the poplars along the valley floors turn gold, the light is low and warm, and you are unlikely to share the canyon road with tour buses. Expect a drive of around 3.5 hours from Ouarzazate to Boumalne Dades, then another 30 minutes to the Todra narrows.
The High Atlas hiking season extends well into October. The Toubkal circuit and Mgoun massif are both walkable, and the mountain villages are harvesting walnuts and apples — you will often see roadside stalls piled with produce. Snow does not usually close the higher passes until November or December, but it can arrive early; check conditions if you plan anything above 3,000 m.
For city trips, Fes in October is excellent. The medina has a post-summer hush, riad prices drop slightly, and the light that filters into the narrow derbs in the late afternoon feels almost amber. Book a medina walk for the morning, when the tanneries and souks are busiest, and save the Bou Inania medersa for the golden hour.
