10-Day Morocco Itinerary: Fes to Marrakech

Arrive in Fes and spend two full days in the medina. The Chouara tanneries are best seen from the leather shop terraces early in the morning before the smell intensifies; the Bou Inania madrasa is the finest piece of Merinid architecture you will encounter anywhere in Morocco. Day two works well for the Mellah (Jewish quarter), the Andalusian quarter across the river, and a slower walk through the dyers’ and coppersmiths’ souks. Budget a full morning just for getting pleasantly lost — the medina has roughly 9,400 lanes and dead-ends, and a local guide is genuinely worth the 300–400 MAD fee.

The drive south from Fes climbs quickly into the Middle Atlas. Ifrane is a jarring but charming Swiss-style town at 1,665 m — worth a 30-minute stop for coffee and a look at the famous stone lion. From Ifrane continue through the cedar forests of Azrou, where Barbary macaques wander the road and will cheerfully take food from your hand. The afternoon brings you to Midelt, a market town at the foot of the Jebel Ayachi, with a simple but comfortable overnight. Dinner here tends to be tajines and bread so fresh it is still warm.

The Ziz Gorges south of Midelt are one of the most dramatic stretches of road in Morocco — a narrow canyon where the river has cut through rose-coloured limestone. The valley opens into a vast palmerie around Er-Rachidia; keep going south through Erfoud and Rissani (the gateway to the Tafilalt, once the most important salt-trading hub in the Sahara). By late afternoon you reach the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes and swap tarmac for sand. A one-hour camel ride into the dunes in time for sunset, followed by dinner and drumming at a desert camp, is the experience most travellers name as the trip highlight.

One night is the minimum; a second day earns you the sunrise camel ride before the tour groups arrive, a sandboarding session on the dunes (boards hire from around 50 MAD), and the afternoon to explore the edge of the erg on foot or quad bike. The small village of Khamlia, a 15-minute drive from Merzouga, has a tight community of Gnawa musicians who perform for visitors — it is a quieter, more genuine encounter than anything in the medinas. Leave the second evening to ride back to your riad in the village for a proper bed before the long drive west.

Head west across the Tafilalt plain to Tinghir, then north into the Todra Gorge: a slot canyon where 300-metre walls close to about 10 metres apart at the narrowest point. A 45-minute walk inside the gorge costs nothing and looks extraordinary in morning light. Continue west along the Route des Kasbahs — a string of earthen fortresses in various states of dissolution — before dropping into the Dades Valley for the night. The Dades Gorge is greener and wider than Todra; a short walk up to the bend in the valley after dinner is worth it for the view.

Ouarzazate sits at the centre of Morocco's film industry — the Atlas Studios lot has hosted sets for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones. A two-hour visit gives you the context. From Ouarzazate it is a short drive to Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar that is probably the most photographed earthen structure on the continent. Cross the ford (or the footbridge) and walk up to the granary at the top for the view over the valley. The light in late afternoon is warm and the crowds thin. Overnight in or near Ouarzazate.

The Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) is the main crossing of the High Atlas and the most dramatic road in Morocco. The drive from the valley floor to the summit involves dozens of switchbacks with views across bare plateau and snow-capped peaks (snow lingers into April). On the northern descent, the landscape softens into argan tree scrubland and Berber villages selling oil and pottery at the roadside. You arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon with two full days ahead to explore the city without rush.

Two days in Marrakech is enough to see the essentials without feeling rushed. Jemaa el-Fna square is best at dusk when the food stalls open and the storytellers and musicians converge; the Bahia Palace and Saadian Tombs are close together and worth a half-day. The souks behind the square are organised loosely by trade — metalwork, leather, lamps, textiles — and are far more navigable than Fes. Day 10 works well for a half-day excursion to the Ourika Valley or the Agafay rocky desert before your departure. The Menara Gardens, just outside the walls, are a calm place to end the trip.
