Morocco for New Year: Best Destination by Travel Style

Marrakech turns on for New Year. The main riads in Bab Doukkala and the Kennaria quarter host private dinners with live Gnaoua music — expect to pay 600–1,200 MAD per person for a set menu with entertainment. The alleys of the medina are lit with lanterns, and the buzz around Jemaa el-Fna reaches a peak just before midnight. Fes is quieter and more intimate: a rooftop table above the Bou Inania Madrasa, a slow-cooked mechoui, candles. Both cities suit couples well; Marrakech if you want energy, Fes if you want stillness. Book riad rooms at least six weeks ahead — good properties sell out by October.

Agadir is Morocco's most family-friendly resort city, and New Year here is calm, organised and warm (daytime highs around 20°C in early January). Neither city has ticketed fireworks shows, which is exactly the point: this is Morocco without the NYE markup.

Glamping tents at top-tier camps run 2,000–4,000 MAD per night, often with dinner and a camel trek included.

Spending New Year in the Sahara is as far from a standard city countdown as you can get. The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga rise to 150 metres; from the top you can see for fifty kilometres in every direction with zero light pollution. December 31 in the desert typically means a camel trek in at sunset, a bonfire dinner of slow-cooked lamb and preserved lemon, Berber music until late, and a midnight that arrives with no phones ringing and no fireworks — just drumbeats and stars. The nearest city, Errachidia, is 80 km north; most travellers reach Merzouga via a private transfer from Fes (roughly 4 hours) or as part of a multi-day desert circuit from Marrakech.

Essaouira — four hours north by road — has a similar energy but a more artsy, windswept character.
