Is Tap Water Safe to Drink in Morocco?

Technically, Marrakech tap water is treated to national standards, but most travellers and many locals avoid drinking it directly — especially in the medina, where ageing pipes can affect taste and purity. The standard advice is to buy bottled water for drinking and keep your mouth closed in the shower. Restaurants use tap water for cooking and ice machines, which is almost always fine; the risk is mainly from drinking large quantities of unfiltered tap water over several days.

Fes tap water is treated but the medina's ancient pipe network is the real uncertainty. Short-stay visitors are consistently advised to stick with bottled water. The Ville Nouvelle part of Fes has newer infrastructure and the risk is lower, but for simplicity — and given that 1.5-litre bottles cost as little as 4–7 MAD (under $1) — there is no reason to gamble. If you are staying a month or more, a filtered-water jug is a practical solution.

This divides opinion. Most short-stay travellers play it safe and use bottled water for teeth brushing, particularly in Marrakech medina and Fes el-Bali. Others use tap water with no problems at all. The honest answer is that swallowing a small amount of tap water while brushing is unlikely to make a healthy adult seriously ill — the issue is cumulative exposure over a week. If you have a sensitive stomach or are only visiting for a few days, using bottled water for teeth brushing is a reasonable precaution and costs almost nothing extra.

Ice in tourist-facing restaurants and hotels in cities like Marrakech, Fes, Agadir, and Essaouira is generally made from filtered or purified water and is considered safe by most travellers. High-end riad kitchens and licensed hotel bars routinely use filtered-water ice machines. The higher risk is from juice stands in open souks, where ice may come from unchecked tap water. As a rule: ice in a sit-down restaurant serving tourists — fine. Ice in a blended drink from a street stall — think twice.

Bottled water is inexpensive throughout Morocco. A 1.5-litre bottle from a supermarket or convenience store runs around 4–8 MAD (indicative; roughly $0.40–$0.80 USD). The same bottle at a café or tourist restaurant will be 10–20 MAD. At a hotel minibar, expect 20–35 MAD. Budget travellers who buy water at supermarkets (Carrefour, Marjane, Label'Vie) will spend very little — a week’s drinking water typically costs under 60 MAD per person. Five-litre refill bottles from local épiceries (corner shops) are even cheaper at around 8–12 MAD.

However, they do not remove the heavy mineral load, pipe sediment, or high chlorine taste that are the main issues in places like Marrakech medina. For backpackers doing long treks in the High Atlas or Draa Valley who cannot carry enough bottled water, a filter is genuinely useful. For city visitors, buying bottled water is cheaper and more convenient than treating tap water.
