7 Days in Northern Morocco

Yes — northern Morocco is genuinely different from the south, and it is chronically undervisited. Tangier has reinvented itself into a cosmopolitan city with a serious contemporary art scene. Chefchaouen is a living village, not a theme park, and the Rif Mountains behind it are some of the most dramatic scenery in the country. Fes is arguably the most intact medieval city in the Arab world. Seven days gives you room to actually slow down in each place rather than photograph and leave.

CTM buses run directly from Tangier Gare routière to Chefchaouen in around 3 hours for roughly 70 MAD. The bus is comfortable and reliable. If you want to stop in Tetouan on the way — and the UNESCO medina there is genuinely worth 90 minutes — a private car or grand taxi is the practical option, since the bus is express. Shared grand taxis from Tetouan to Chefchaouen run for around 40–50 MAD per seat but require a change in Tetouan first.

Two nights is the sweet spot. One night is enough to see the famous medina streets and get a sunset from the Spanish Mosque, but it leaves no time for the excellent day trips into the Rif Mountains — the Akchour waterfalls or the natural bridge known as God's Bridge are the best of these, and both require a few hours. Three nights would only make sense if you plan to hike seriously in the hills or want a genuinely slow pace.

Quite different. The north has a Mediterranean climate, pine and cedar forests, and a geography that feels more like Andalusia than the Sahara. The food has stronger Spanish and Andalusian influences — more fresh fish, fewer tagines. The Berber culture of the Rif mountains is distinct from the southern Amazigh communities. Historically, the north was under Spanish colonial control while the south was French, which still shows in architecture, administration, and local customs. Tangier in particular feels like a crossroads of Africa, Spain and France.

Comfortably, yes — and this itinerary is designed to prove it. The distances are short: Tangier to Chefchaouen is 120 km, Chefchaouen to Fes is around 200 km. The pace allows two nights in Tangier, two in Chefchaouen, and two in Fes. The only catch is that Fes truly rewards more time — if you can extend to 8–9 days, adding a day in Fes (or a day trip to Meknes and Volubilis) significantly deepens the experience.

Tangier is significantly safer than its historical reputation suggests. The city has undergone major investment in infrastructure and policing since the early 2010s. The medina is walkable at night, and the Grand Socco area is busy with Moroccan families until late. Standard travel precautions apply — watch your bag in crowded markets, agree taxi fares before getting in, and decline unsolicited "guides" around the port. As a solo traveller or couple, you will find Tangier straightforward compared to, say, a busy Marrakech souk day.

For flexibility and comfort on this specific route, a private car or minivan is the most rewarding option — it lets you stop in Tetouan, pause at mountain viewpoints, and arrive on your schedule. That said, CTM buses between all three cities are reliable, air-conditioned and cheap (70–90 MAD per leg). Trains do not serve Chefchaouen, but Fes has an excellent train connection onward to Casablanca and Marrakech. If your trip starts or ends at Casablanca Airport, the train is the sensible last leg.
