The Medina Polizzi is a craftwork quarter with resident artisans and virtually no crowds. The Valley of the Birds runs through the city centre, and the Talborjt neighbourhood has cafes and argan cooperatives. A full day exploring these covers the best of the city without touching the resort strip at all.

The Kasbah ruins, the Souk El Had, and the Medina Polizzi are all within 4 kilometres of the beach hotels and give a genuinely Moroccan day out. If you are arriving on a day trip from Marrakech (about 3 hours by road), the attractions listed here fill a comfortable day without rushing.

Start with the Kasbah Oufella at dawn for the views, then head to Souk El Had for the immersive market experience. Both are typically missed by package tourists and require almost no logistical effort. If you have to pick just one, the souk edges it for cultural depth — it operates Monday through Thursday and Saturday to Sunday, and Sunday is the biggest day. Combine it with the Medina Polizzi next door and you have four hours of genuinely interesting material without setting foot on the beach at all.

It is worth the 20-minute uphill walk, particularly early in the morning. The walls are largely reconstructed after the 1960 earthquake, so you are not looking at ancient stonework, but the view across the bay and down to the port is excellent. The Arabic inscription — "God, King, Country" — set into the hillside in large white letters is a landmark best understood from below. Go early when the light is low, the haze has not built and the temperature is comfortable. Entry is free and the path is well maintained with handrails on steeper sections.

For fish, the local restaurants around the port road and the city centre streets near Avenue Hassan II offer freshly grilled dorade, sea bass and sardines at prices roughly a third of the resort hotel restaurants — indicatively 60–100 MAD for a full plate with bread, salad and a drink. The restaurants around Place Lahcen Tamri are a reliable choice for tagines and pastilla in a no-frills local setting. The Medina Polizzi also has a small cafe if you want somewhere with a traditional courtyard feel. Avoid the corniche hotel restaurants for lunch — they are expensive and not representative of Moroccan cooking.

About 260 kilometres by the A7 motorway, which takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours in normal traffic — the road climbs through the Tizi n'Test pass area or takes the flatter coastal route past Chichaoua. The tolled motorway via Chichaoua is the fastest route and the most straightforward to drive. A private transfer from Marrakech to Agadir costs indicatively from 800–1,200 MAD each way for a vehicle. If you are doing Agadir as a day trip from Marrakech, factor in leaving by 7 am to arrive with time for the kasbah at its best.

The main Souk El Had is closed on Fridays and at its largest and most vibrant on Sundays, when traders come in from surrounding villages. From Saturday to Thursday (except Friday) the market operates from roughly 8 am to 6 pm, though the outer ring of clothing and household stalls may open later. The fresh produce section inside the main building is the most interesting part and peaks in the morning. Go before midday to see it at full tilt; the food stalls start packing up by early afternoon.
