Erg Chegaga Dune Walk

The gateway town is M'hamid el-Ghizlane, roughly 95 km south of Zagora. From Marrakech, the drive is around 6 hours via Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley. No public buses reach M'hamid regularly — most travellers either rent a car for the Marrakech–Zagora–M'hamid section or book a private guided tour from Marrakech or Ouarzazate that includes the 4x4 transfer from M'hamid into the dunes. There is no way to reach the dune interior without a 4x4 and an experienced driver.

Yes — on foot is arguably the best way to experience them, though it is demanding. The dune field stretches roughly 40 km east to west and 10–15 km north to south, so you cannot walk the entire extent in a day-trip. A typical guided one-night trek covers 10–16 km on foot, which gives a genuine sense of the scale without being exhausting. Two-night treks (20–25 km total) let you reach the quieter central sections where the dunes are highest and the solitude is complete.

A one-night, two-day trek is the most common format: drive in on day one, walk 6–10 km to camp, sleep under the stars, walk back at dawn on day two. For something more immersive, two-night treks push deeper into the dune field and feel genuinely remote. Three-day walks are possible but require a support camel carrying water and supplies. Allow at least three full days from Marrakech to do the one-night trek comfortably — one day driving in, one night in the dunes, one day driving out.

They are different experiences rather than one being objectively superior. Erg Chebbi (near Merzouga) is more accessible, has more camp and accommodation options, and suits travellers with limited time. Erg Chegaga is far harder to reach but significantly quieter — on most nights you will share the dune field with only a handful of other groups. The dunes are also taller and the landscape is rawer. If you want the classic camel-and-camp photo with a comfortable lodge nearby, Merzouga wins. If you want real solitude and a genuine walking challenge, Chegaga is the better choice.

Gaiters or high-laced shoes to keep sand out; a buff or scarf for blowing sand and cool mornings; sunscreen (SPF 50+) and sunglasses; at least three litres of water per person per day (your guide or support camel carries extra); a warm layer for the night (desert temperatures drop sharply after sunset, even in summer); a small headtorch for the pre-dawn summit walk; and cash in Moroccan dirhams — there are no ATMs within 100 km of Chegaga. Leave heavy luggage at your M'hamid guesthouse.

Technically yes, but it is genuinely risky and not recommended. The dune interior has no landmarks and no mobile signal, the tracks disappear within hours, and daytime summer temperatures exceed 45°C. Even experienced desert travellers hire a local Saharan guide who knows the seasonal waterholes, the safe walking hours, and the safe routes between dune faces. The guide fee is typically 300–500 MAD per day — a small cost relative to the safety it provides. Your 4x4 driver also doubles as a navigator for the piste section.

October to April covers the comfortable window, with October–November and March–April being ideal: daytime temperatures run 22–30°C, nights are cold (7–12°C) but not bitter, and the light for photography is extraordinary. December and January are colder overnight (near freezing at the dune tops) but the skies are typically crystal-clear. Avoid June through August — 45°C+ in the afternoon is genuinely dangerous for on-foot trekking, and the heat haze flattens the golden dune colours you came to see.
