Travellers arriving by ferry from Spain land at Tangier Med port, which sits 40 km east of Tangier city — not near the bus station or taxi ranks that the city centre options assume. Getting into Tangier Ville and then back out again adds an unnecessary hour and two transfers.
The cleanest solution is a private transfer arranged to collect you directly from the Tangier Med arrivals hall. You clear passport control, walk out, and get straight into a vehicle heading for Chefchaouen — no city stopover, no changing taxis in Tétouan. The road south through the Rif takes about 2.5 hours and you arrive at your riad door rather than at a taxi rank a ten-minute walk from the medina.
If you want to go independently, take an official port taxi into Tangier Ville (expect 150–200 MAD; agree the price before departure) and then proceed via the bus or shared taxi options above. Build in at least 45 minutes between landing and your onward transport to account for passport queues, which can be long on busy summer days.
