Where to Stay in Essaouira

For most visitors, the medina wins. Essaouira's character — the blue-painted doorways, the rampart walks at dusk, the grilled sardine stalls — is concentrated inside the walls. A riad here means waking up already inside the experience. The beach strip is pleasant but impersonal; you'll spend half your trip walking back in. The exception is surfers or families with cars who need easy access and parking, or anyone who is wind-sensitive and wants a more sheltered position.

Overnight changes the experience completely. Day-trippers typically arrive around noon, wander the souks, eat grilled fish at the harbour, and leave by 5 pm. An overnight lets you catch the medina in the early morning light before the stalls open — the light on the ramparts then is extraordinary — and you can eat dinner at the wood-fired restaurants that only fill up after dark. Two nights is the sweet spot: one full day for exploring, one morning at your own pace before driving back.

Yes, though they are smaller and less lavishly finished than in Marrakech. Essaouira riads tend to be intimate — four to eight rooms built around a central courtyard — and many are European-owned with a relaxed atmosphere. Expect whitewashed walls and blue accents rather than the ornate zellij of a Marrakech riad. Prices are noticeably lower: a mid-range riad in Essaouira that would cost 1,500 MAD per night in the Marrakech medina typically runs 700–900 MAD here.

Honestly, yes — especially from October through April. Essaouira sits on a headland exposed to the North Atlantic trades, and the wind channels hard through the medina alleys after dark. Locals call it the "Alizi" wind, and it is the reason Essaouira attracts world-class kite-surfers. Pack a windproof layer even in summer evenings, and check that your riad has some kind of enclosed lounge or courtyard where you can sit sheltered. In July and August, the wind moderates enough that rooftop dinners are genuinely pleasant.

Within the medina, the stretch around Rue Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah and the alleys south of Place Moulay Hassan are quietest at night and close to the best restaurants. Avoid rooms directly above the fish stalls near the port entrance — the smell arrives early. The northern section of the medina, closer to the Skala de la Ville ramparts, is especially photogenic and slightly less trafficked by day-trippers. If you are a light sleeper, ask for an interior-facing room rather than one on the main pedestrian artery.

The rampart walk from the medina's southern edge to the main surf beach is roughly 800 metres — about ten minutes on foot following the city walls south. From the central souks to the start of the beach is closer to fifteen minutes at a relaxed pace. This means most medina stays are genuinely walkable to the coast: you are not choosing between city and beach so much as choosing which takes priority for your room's immediate surroundings.

Budget: basic guesthouses and rooms in private homes run from 300–450 MAD per night (indicative). Mid-range: a comfortable riad with breakfast and a roof terrace costs 650–1,000 MAD. Boutique top end: the best riads in the medina — with hammams, curated antiques, and four-course dinners — reach 1,500–2,500 MAD. Beach-side hotels with sea views start around 600 MAD for a 3-star and rise steeply. Book ahead in July, August, and around the Gnaoua Festival in June when the city fills completely.
