Book a riad with a clear address and a responsive host who can talk you in on arrival; that single step removes the largest first-timer stressor.

Fes el Bali is the original medina dating to the 9th century — the tanneries, the souks and the great mosques are all here. Fes el Jdid (literally "New Fes") was built in the 13th century and contains the Royal Palace, the mellah (former Jewish quarter) and a walled garden district. They sit side by side and are walkable between the two. For first-timers, el Bali has the most to see, but el Jdid is a quieter residential counterpart worth an afternoon.
