2-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

Yes — if your goal is to reach the real Sahara, sleep under the stars and watch the sunrise over the dunes, two days is enough. You will spend the bulk of Day 1 in the vehicle, but the payoff is genuine Erg Chebbi. What two days does not give you is time to linger: the gorges get photo stops rather than walks, and Aït Benhaddou gets 60 minutes rather than a proper exploration. If your schedule can stretch to three days, the pace improves dramatically. Two days works if your Morocco trip is otherwise short.

Roughly 560 km each way, about 8–10 hours of driving per day including stops. Day 1 is Marrakech → Merzouga via Tizi n'Tichka, Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate — expect to arrive at the dunes around 17:00 if you leave by 07:00. Day 2 is the same route reversed. On a private tour, a driver-guide handles all the driving; on a shared tour you are in a minibus. Either way, bring a neck pillow — the road climbs and curves constantly through the Atlas.

Check specifically whether your camp is a standard tent, a permanent glamping tent or a luxury suite — the price difference can be significant.

Yes — and it is probably the highlight of the whole trip. You overnight at a desert camp near the base of the Erg Chebbi dunes; your guide wakes you around 05:00–05:30 depending on the season. The climb to a decent viewpoint takes 10–15 minutes. You watch the light build from grey to amber to a full golden burn while the wind traces ripple patterns across the sand. It is one of those moments that is still extraordinary even with a dozen other tourists nearby. The sunrise is the main reason to do this tour rather than a same-day return.

Two days gives you exactly one camel ride — the sunset trek into the dunes on Day 1. This is typically 45 minutes to 1.5 hours each way, depending on how deep into the dunes your camp sits. That is genuinely enough to experience the dunes from camelback, watch the light change on the sand, and feel the scale of the Erg. If you want a longer multi-day camel circuit of the dunes, you need at least two nights in Merzouga, which points to a 3-day tour minimum.

A private tour is meaningfully better for this itinerary. The drive is long enough that being able to stop when you want — at a particular viewpoint, a roadside argan cooperative, or that ksar you spotted from the road — makes a real difference to the experience. A shared tour keeps a fixed schedule, and if there are other travellers who want a different pace, you are stuck. Private tours from reputable operators typically start around 2,800 MAD per person for two people; at four people the per-head cost drops considerably. For solo travellers on a tight budget, shared departures are reasonable value.

October through April is the sweet spot. Days are warm enough to enjoy the dunes but nights are cold and clear — perfect for stargazing from the camp. March and November offer particularly stable weather. Avoid mid-June to mid-August: midday desert temperatures can exceed 45°C, which makes the Atlas drive uncomfortable and the camel trek genuinely unpleasant. Summer sunrise treks start before 05:00 to beat the heat, which means a very early wake-up after an already-short night. If you must travel in summer, choose a camp with air-conditioned rooms rather than tent accommodation.
