Day 1 · Depart 07:00 – arrive Merzouga ~17:00
Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou → Dades → Merzouga
You leave Marrakech before breakfast and climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), where the road twists through Berber villages and the Atlas drops away behind you. Mid-morning stop at Aït Benhaddou — the UNESCO-listed mud-brick ksar that has stood in for Yunkai, Uxhal and a dozen other fictional cities on screen. A quick photo stop at Ouarzazate, then east along the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs through Skoura and the Dades Valley. By mid-afternoon the landscape has gone from mountains to hammada (stony desert), and the first orange edges of the Erg Chebbi dunes appear on the horizon around Rissani. You reach your desert camp hotel by 17:00, swap the 4x4 for a camel, and ride into the dunes for sunset.
