Day 1
Fes → Ifrane → Midelt → Erfoud → Merzouga
The drive south from Fes is genuinely scenic — more so than the Atlas crossing from Marrakech, in its own quieter way. You leave the medina behind and climb into the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas around Ifrane and Azrou, where Barbary macaques often sit at the roadside. A lunch stop in Midelt is the natural halfway mark; the town is famous for its apples and its position between two mountain ranges. After Midelt the landscape opens out into the Ziz Valley, whose palm-lined gorges feel like a film set. You pass Erfoud and Rissani before the sand-coloured road runs straight toward Merzouga. By late afternoon the Erg Chebbi dunes come into view — a 25-kilometre wall of orange and gold looming above the plain.
- Cedar forests of Azrou — Barbary macaque sightings likely
- Midelt lunch stop (apple stalls, local café)
- Ziz Valley palm gorges
- Erg Chebbi dunes first view from Merzouga village
