48 Hours in Rabat: Weekend Itinerary for Culture Lovers

Yes — two days is the sweet spot for Rabat. The city has three genuine world-class sites (Kasbah des Oudayas, Hassan Tower, and Chellah), a manageable medina, and a good contemporary art museum. It also feels like a functional capital rather than a theme park for tourists, which makes it a refreshing contrast to Marrakech. A single day is doable but rushed; two days lets you explore at a proper pace, eat well, and catch the Chellah in the right light.

Use the afternoon of day one for the Kasbah des Oudayas and a medina walk, then spend day two on Hassan Tower, Chellah, and the MMVI Museum of Modern Art. This ordering puts Chellah in the mid-morning of day two when the storks are most active and the light is still angled rather than overhead-flat. Reverse the order if you arrive in the morning on day one.

The Kasbah des Oudayas is the most atmospheric — a 12th-century fortress with blue-and-white alleys and Andalusian gardens overlooking the Atlantic. The Hassan Tower is the grandest historical monument, an unfinished 12th-century minaret flanked by 200 column stubs and the ornate Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Chellah is the most surprising — a Roman-Merinid layered ruin full of nesting storks. Together these three sites take about five to six hours in total.

For culture and sightseeing, Rabat is significantly better. Casablanca has the spectacular Hassan II Mosque and a lively corniche, but very little historic medina or classical monument content. Rabat has three layered historical sites, a navigable old city, and a calm, dignified atmosphere that many visitors find more rewarding. Casablanca is a better choice for nightlife, contemporary restaurants, and the airport hub — but for a culture-first weekend, Rabat wins.

The ONCF train from Casa-Port or Casa-Voyageurs to Rabat-Ville runs every 30–60 minutes throughout the day and takes between 45 and 55 minutes depending on the service. Fares start at around 40 MAD second class, around 65 MAD first class. Trains are clean, punctual by regional standards, and have air conditioning. Shared grands taxis also run the route from various points in Casablanca for a similar price but are slower due to road traffic.

Do not skip Chellah. Most Rabat guides lead with Hassan Tower, which is impressive but brief; Chellah rewards a slower visit. The Roman columns and Merinid mausoleums exist in the same enclosure, storks clatter on every ruined minaret, and the walled garden is genuinely peaceful. Arrive between 10:00 and 11:30 for the best combination of light and relative quiet before tour groups arrive from Casablanca. Also do not miss the Oudayas at dusk — the estuary view at golden hour rivals anything in Morocco.
