The hike from Asilah to Ksar Seghir is one of the best coastal walks in Morocco — and almost nobody knows it exists. The path leaves Asilah’s whitewashed medina, climbs to the clifftops above the Atlantic, and heads northeast through a landscape of sea-carved limestone, olive scrub, and small fishing coves that are only reachable on foot. Around the midpoint, the Strait of Gibraltar opens up ahead of you: Spain sits so close across the water that on a clear morning you can read the hills of Tarifa.
This is trail walking at its most raw. There are no waymarkers, no tourist infrastructure, no cafe at the halfway point. The path is a web of fishermen’s tracks and farm roads held together by local knowledge. That is precisely what makes it special for walkers who want to step outside the well-worn Morocco circuit of souks and desert camps — and it is why hiring a guide who knows this coastline genuinely changes the experience from a navigation exercise into an immersive half-day in northern Morocco’s landscape.

The full route runs northeast from Asilah’s ramparts to Ksar Seghir’s river mouth. Distances are indicative — the clifftop path weaves, and detours to coves add kilometres easily.
Leave Asilah's whitewashed medina via the northern ramparts and pick up the coastal path that hugs the clifftop above the Atlantic. The first stretch is the easiest to navigate — a clear track threads through low scrub with the ocean below and the occasional fishing hut. You are heading northeast, so the morning sun is mostly behind you.
The path dips between several headlands, sometimes dropping to small rocky coves where fishermen camp overnight. At around the 12 km mark, a limestone bluff gives the first clear sightline toward the Strait of Gibraltar — on a clear day you can make out the hills of Tarifa, Spain, sitting just 14 km across the water. This is the most photogenic stretch and the section most likely to reward an early start.
The formal clifftop path gives way to agricultural tracks as the coast flattens slightly. You pass smallholdings, olive groves and the odd Berber shepherd. Navigation requires some attention here — keep the sea to your left and follow the most-worn track. If in doubt, aim northeast. The Route Nationale N1 is never far inland, so a shortcut taxi back is always possible.
The final stretch descends to the mouth of the Oued Ksar, where the village of Ksar Seghir sits around a sheltered bay. Just before the village, a 15th-century Portuguese fortress ruin makes for a worthwhile 20-minute detour — you can walk the crumbling walls and look back along the coast you have just covered. The village itself has one or two basic cafes serving kefta and mint tea.

The honest trade-off: you will spend mental energy on route-finding in the middle section that a local guide eliminates in seconds. Local guides also know which coves are accessible at low tide, where to find the best Gibraltar viewpoints, and which farm tracks double back in circles.

Yes, though they are almost entirely undocumented in English. The clifftop path heading northeast from Asilah follows the Atlantic coast toward the Strait of Gibraltar, passing through farm tracks and fishing coves for around 28–32 km before reaching Ksar Seghir. It is not a signposted national trail — more a network of fishermen's paths and rural tracks — but the route is walkable with basic navigation skills or a local guide.
You can, and the walk is genuinely beautiful — clifftop views, small coves, and virtually no other tourists. The full route to Ksar Seghir is best done as a one-way walk (7–9 hours), starting early in Asilah and finishing in Ksar Seghir, from where grands taxis run back to Asilah or Tangier. Attempting the full route as a return day hike is only realistic for very fit walkers. Many people instead walk the first 10–12 km out to the best viewpoints and then turn back.
By the coastal path the distance is approximately 28–32 km, depending on which coves you dip into. As the crow flies it is around 22 km. By road (the N1) it is about 37 km — the coastal path is more direct but slower underfoot. Budget around 7–9 hours of actual walking time at a comfortable pace. Most hikers prefer to drive one car to Ksar Seghir and leave it there before returning to Asilah by taxi to start the walk.
The scenery alternates between clifftop tracks with Atlantic views, small rocky or sandy coves accessible only on foot, and rolling farmland with olive and argan scrub. Around the halfway point, the Strait of Gibraltar comes into view and on a clear day the Spanish coast is visible across the water — a striking moment. The final descent into Ksar Seghir follows a river mouth where migrating birds concentrate in autumn. The whole route has a raw, unmanaged feel that is rare in Morocco's more-visited hiking corridors.
The walk is safe in good conditions and low season crowds are essentially zero. However, the path is not waymarked and there are no rescue services or emergency shelters en route. The main practical concerns are navigation accuracy in the middle farm-track section, heat in July and August (carry 2–3 litres of water minimum), and the absence of shade on the cliff sections. Going with a local guide, or as part of a guided private tour, is strongly recommended for anyone unfamiliar with self-sufficient trail navigation.
Ksar Seghir itself is a small fishing village but punches above its size historically. The Portuguese-era fortress ruins at the river mouth are genuinely interesting and take about 30 minutes to explore. The sheltered bay is good for swimming in summer. From Ksar Seghir, Tangier is about 35 km northeast by road, making it an easy link for travellers heading to or from the ferry port. Alternatively, the nearby Cap Malabata lighthouse stretch offers a shorter clifftop walk of 3–4 km if you still have energy.
October through April is ideal. Spring (March–May) brings wildflowers along the clifftop path and mild temperatures of 16–22°C, while October–November offers clean air, lower humidity, and good visibility for the Gibraltar sightlines. Avoid July and August when temperatures on exposed clifftops regularly exceed 35°C and there is no shade for long stretches. Winter (December–February) is perfectly hikeable but bring a windproof jacket — the Straits generate strong Atlantic gusts.
