Essaouira
Windswept medina & surf coast
Getting there: ~2.5 hrs from Marrakech; ~3.5 hrs north of Agadir
Suggested stay: 1–2 nights
Essaouira sits under almost perpetual Atlantic wind, which has turned it into one of North Africa's premier kitesurfing and windsurfing spots while keeping summer temperatures beautifully mild — rarely above 24 °C even in August. The medina is UNESCO-listed, compact enough to walk in an hour but rich enough to fill a day: blue-painted walls, 18th-century Portuguese ramparts, a working fishing harbour, and souks that sell argan products without the Marrakech-level pressure. The wind also means Essaouira is not a sunbathing beach; if lying on sand is the goal, read on.
- Skala de la Ville sea-ramparts at sunset
- Medina souks: argan oil, thuya woodwork, silver jewellery
- Sidi Kaouki beach (15 km south) for kitesurfing
- Fresh seafood on Port Road — grilled sardines from ~20 MAD
