Azzaden Valley Trek

The Azzaden Valley is known for its exceptional combination of lush gorge scenery, flowing year-round river, and intact Berber hamlets that receive almost no tourist traffic. Unlike the main Toubkal trail, which has been heavily walked for decades, Azzaden retains the feel of a working mountain landscape — you will pass families harvesting walnuts, shepherds moving flocks, and small fields of barley irrigated by hand-built channels called seguias. The valley sits within the Toubkal National Park but is rarely mentioned in mainstream trekking guides.

The trailhead is Imlil village, reached by a shared grand taxi (roughly 70–90 MAD per seat) or private transfer from Marrakech — about 1 hour 45 minutes on the R203 road via Asni. From Imlil itself, the Azzaden circuit begins by heading toward the Around valley and climbing to the Tizi Mzic pass rather than continuing straight toward the Toubkal refuge. There are no buses to Imlil; taxis depart from near the Bab Ghmat area of Marrakech. A private car or organised tour transfer is the most reliable option for early starts.

Stage 2 along the gorge is genuinely accessible to fit beginners who are comfortable with uneven terrain and river crossings on slippery rocks. The full 3-day loop, however, is a different matter: Stage 3 climbs over 1,100 m to the Tizi n'Oucheg at 2,750 m, which is demanding even for experienced hikers. A realistic assessment: if you have done multi-day hill walking — say, a British Munro or a moderate Alpine route — you can manage the full circuit comfortably. Pure beginners would be better served doing just Stages 1–2 and returning via Tacheddirt.

Accommodation is simple and very local. Tacheddirt has two or three gîtes with basic dorms, blankets and a communal evening meal — expect to pay 150–250 MAD per person (indicative) for bed and half-board. Amsouzart has at least one gîte and space to pitch a tent near the river; bring your own tent and sleeping bag if camping. There are no booking platforms for these places — your guide will arrange it. Carry cash, as there are no ATMs anywhere on this route. The meals, incidentally, are excellent: tagines cooked on wood fires, mint tea and freshly-made bread.

The Toubkal summit (4,167 m) is North Africa's highest peak, and that status brings crowds, a busy mountain hut and a well-marked path. Azzaden is lower, quieter and far more scenic at valley level — it wins on Berber village authenticity and gorge drama, and loses on summit bragging rights. Fit trekkers often combine both in four to five days: Azzaden loop on days 1–3, then a Toubkal summit attempt on days 4–5 using Imlil as a base. That approach gets you the best of both circuits without backtracking.

Yes — the standard itinerary is a 3-day loop starting and finishing in Imlil: Day 1 via Tizi Mzic to Tacheddirt, Day 2 down the gorge to Amsouzart, Day 3 up to Tizi n'Oucheg and back to Imlil via Arghen. Total distance is roughly 40–42 km with around 3,200 m of cumulative ascent. The loop can be reversed (clockwise vs anti-clockwise), though most guides prefer the descent into the gorge on Day 2 rather than the ascent, as the path is narrower that way and easier to follow going downhill. A fourth day allows you to linger in Amsouzart and explore side valleys without rushing the pass.

A licensed mountain guide is not legally required on the Azzaden Valley route (unlike above-refuge level on Toubkal), but it is strongly advised. The trail is genuinely faint in sections, waymarking is minimal, and the river crossings on Stage 2 can be tricky after snowmelt or rain. A local guide also unlocks the social dimension of the trek — introductions in villages, knowledge of which gîte is open and what the river conditions are like. Indicative guide rates run from 400–600 MAD per day (not per person). Mule hire for luggage is around 200–300 MAD per day extra and makes a meaningful difference on the pass day.
