Essaouira
Port Fish Grill Market
Morocco's most atmospheric fish experience
The action happens right at the working port where blue-painted boats unload their catches each morning. Stalls line the harbour wall, and for a few dirhams the vendors will grill whatever you point at — sardines, sea bass, sole, prawns — on charcoal braziers while you wait. You eat at rough wooden tables with lemon wedges and rough bread. The whole circuit from arriving at the port to leaving with a full stomach takes about an hour.
Best for
Grilled sardines, sole, sea bream, prawns
Opening
Daily, best 11:00–14:00
Indicative cost
40–80 MAD per person for a grilled plate (~$4–8)
Getting there
10-min walk from the medina gates or 15 min from the beach car park
Local tip: Point at the fish, agree a price before it goes on the grill, and ask for "mixed plate" (assiette mixte) for variety.
