Morning (09:00–10:30)
The Working Port & Fish Market
Essaouira’s port is a proper working harbour, not a tourist set-piece. Blue-hulled sardiniers offload their catch while auction calls echo across the quay. Walk through the blue-painted fish-processing alley — the smell is bracing but the scene is extraordinary. By mid-morning the ice-packed market stalls have the day’s haul displayed: sea bass, prawns, squid, spider crab, and the inevitable sardines. You can buy directly, hand it to one of the portside grill stalls, and eat it charred and salted ten minutes later. Budget indicatively around 60–120 MAD (roughly $6–12) for a mixed grill, depending on what you pick and market rates that day.
Local tip
Arrive before 10:00 — the freshest fish and the best light both fade fast.
