Aït Benhaddou
Souss-Massa-Drâa · Ouarzazate (30 km)
The most-visited kasbah in Morocco and the benchmark against which all others are measured. Aït Benhaddou is a fortified ksar — a cluster of earthen towerhouses — that rises in ochre tiers above the Ounila River. It has appeared in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. A shallow ford or a footbridge crosses to the village; from the summit, a crumbling watchtower gives views across the Drâa Valley that explain why this mud-brick citadel has survived since at least the 11th century. A handful of families still live inside.
