Best Sunset Spots in Marrakech

The single best spot depends on what you want. For a rooftop café experience with drinks and a view over the medina, Café des Épices above Place Rahba Kedima is hard to beat — it is free to access, has an unobstructed Koutoubia sightline, and tea costs around 25–35 MAD. For a more immersive garden experience at no cost, the Koutoubia Gardens are spectacular, especially in winter when the Atlas Mountains are snow-capped behind the minaret. If you want food as well as a view, book a table at Nomad restaurant.

Café des Épices is the most popular pure rooftop café for sunset, but the Nomad restaurant rooftop edges it for food quality and the precision of its Koutoubia framing. Le Jardin Secret tower terrace has the clearest northward and westward views of any paid attraction in the medina. For a bar (serving alcohol) with sunset terrace views, there are several in the Gueliz neighbourhood — the So Lounge at Sofitel Marrakech is one, with views over the pool gardens and the city skyline from around 80–120 MAD for a cocktail.

Marrakech is at roughly 31°N latitude, so summer sunset times are late. In July, sunset falls around 8:20–8:30 pm local time (Morocco observes +01:00 year-round). In June it is similar, around 8:15–8:25 pm. This is genuinely late for dinner-and-sunset planning — many restaurants in the medina start service from 7 pm, so budget a gap between sitting down and the actual golden hour. In winter, sunset is much earlier: around 5:50–6:10 pm in December and January.

Most café rooftops in the medina are technically free to enter, but there is a social expectation that you buy something — at minimum a pot of mint tea, around 20–40 MAD. Le Jardin Secret charges a paid entry fee (around 70 MAD in 2025) that covers the garden and tower terrace. Restaurant rooftops like Nomad expect you to order food. Purely free options include the Koutoubia Gardens and Djemaa el-Fna square itself, both of which are public spaces.

Sunset on the square is worth experiencing once, but manage expectations around the view itself. Djemaa el-Fna is flat and open — there is no elevated vantage point, and the surrounding buildings are no more than two to three stories, so you do not get a sky-wide panorama. What you do get is the best time of day on Morocco's most famous square: food stalls lighting up, snake charmers packing up, and the evening crowd building. Pair it with a pre-sunset drink at a nearby rooftop for both the panoramic view and the square buzz.

October to March gives you the most dramatic sunsets in Marrakech. The air is clearer after summer heat haze clears, the Atlas Mountains are often snow-dusted from November onwards, and the lower angle of winter sun creates richer amber and pink tones. Spring (March–April) is also excellent and has the advantage of still-warm evenings. Summer sunsets (June–August) happen late and can be hazy, though the longer golden hour gives more photography time. Avoid Sirocco wind days in any season — dust from the Sahara flattens the colours.

A private guided evening walk is genuinely useful in Marrakech because the medina is notoriously easy to get turned around in — particularly at dusk when lanes narrow and the light drops. A guide who knows the medina can route you from a rooftop café through the spice souks to Djemaa el-Fna in under 45 minutes, timing each stop to the light. Self-guided is absolutely doable too, but allow extra navigation time and go before dark rather than at dark.
