Best Viewpoints in Marrakech Medina

No single free public rooftop lets you see the entire medina, but the tower at Le Jardin Secret comes closest — it gives a genuine 360-degree view over the northern medina roofscape. For a wider panorama that includes the Atlas Mountains backdrop, head to the Koutoubia gardens at ground level on a clear morning (October to March are the clearest months). Combining two or three spots in a half-day walk gives you the most complete picture.

Café de France and Café Argana both look west toward the Koutoubia, but the minaret is better photographed from the ground-level Koutoubia gardens directly below it, where you can frame it without foreground clutter. If you want a rooftop with the minaret in the background, the upper terrace of Café Argana offers the widest angle. Bring a 28–50mm equivalent lens and plan to be there 20 minutes before sunset.

Most rooftop cafés in the medina charge nothing for entry — you just need to order something (a mint tea runs 20–40 MAD, indicative). Le Jardin Secret is the main exception, with a paid garden admission of roughly 50–70 MAD (indicative), which also covers access to its tower viewpoint. The Koutoubia gardens are entirely free. Avoid anyone at ground level who offers to 'show you the rooftop’ for a fee — those are unofficial guides angling for a tip or a commission.

Dusk — roughly an hour before sunset until 30 minutes after — is the classic answer. The square shifts from its daytime market format to its evening restaurant-and-entertainment mode, the light turns golden, and the energy on the terraces above the Fna is palpable. If you are after photography rather than atmosphere, mid-morning (09:00–10:30) gives cleaner light without the harsh midday shadows that flatten the square’s texture. Avoid the dead hour from 14:00–16:00 when the square empties and the light is brutal.

Yes — several. The Koutoubia mosque gardens are open and free during daylight hours. The rooftop cafés around Bab Doukkala only require you to buy a drink (15–25 MAD). Some riad guesthouses allow non-guests onto their roof terraces in the morning for a mint tea — worth asking at a smaller riad near the Mouassine or Kennaria quarters. Le Jardin Secret is the only viewpoint that charges a dedicated entrance fee, though the garden itself justifies the price separately.

Photographing the general square, roofscape and skyline from a rooftop is fine and expected — cafés along Djemaa el-Fna exist partly for this purpose. Zooming into individual people in the square without consent is more complex; local attitudes vary, and many performers and vendors treat the square as their workplace. A general rule: if someone is clearly posing for or performing for an audience, a discreet shot is usually fine; if you are zooming into a private conversation or someone’s face, ask first. Being respectful and quick with your camera reads better than treating the medina as a theme park.

Le Jardin Secret and the Djemaa el-Fna cafés (Café de France, Café Argana) are easy to find independently — they are on or near the main square with signage. La Terrasse des Épices and the Bab Doukkala spots involve a short walk into the medina’s alleys. Google Maps works reasonably well in Marrakech’s medina now, but for a first visit, a guided morning medina walk with a local guide will take you to all the good viewpoints and fill in the history between stops — and you avoid the common false-guide scenario at the square.
