Ouzoud is Morocco’s showpiece waterfall and, on any measure, the one worth building a day around. Three curtains of water drop 110 metres in total through terraces of olive and fig trees, frothing into a large plunge pool where you can actually swim. The path down takes roughly 20 minutes on a well-maintained trail; Barbary macaques work the trees above, angling for tourists’ snacks with practised indifference. At the base, small wooden fishing platforms jut over the river and local boys cannon off rocks into the foam. There is a strip of cafe-restaurants on the clifftop, all charging similar prices (expect around 60–100 MAD for a simple lunch); the ones with the best views fill up by midday. Spring visits — March to May — catch the falls at near-peak flow after Atlas snowmelt, and the surrounding meadows bloom with wildflowers. By July the volume drops, though the swimming actually improves as the water calms.
Practical tips
- Arrive before 10 am to beat tour groups from Marrakech
- The trail can be slippery after rain — wear grip shoes
- Guides at the top offer tours of olive-oil mills nearby (40–60 MAD indicative)
- Shared taxis from Azilal town cost around 15–20 MAD per seat
