The most concentrated rug shopping in Morocco is in Marrakech’s northern medina. Rue des Tapis (near the Bab Debbagh tanneries) has dozens of shops stacked floor to ceiling with every type. The lanes between Djemaa el-Fna and the Ben Youssef Mosque are slightly less tourist-heavy. If you have time and a guide, the streets near Bab el-Khemis on the northern edge of the medina are where Marrakech’s interior designers and riad owners actually shop — prices are noticeably closer to wholesale.
In Fes, the carpet quarter sits just off the main medina axis in Fes el-Bali, and the workshops here are more likely to show you how rugs are woven before trying to sell you one. Ouarzazate is the best place to find Zanafi and Draa Valley pieces at better prices than Marrakech, since the rugs do not carry medina mark-up.
On haggling: the first price quoted is rarely less than double the final price the seller will accept, and often triple. A sensible opening counter is 40–50% of the quoted figure. Take your time, look at several rugs, mention you are visiting other shops — all of this shifts the dynamic in your favour. Never feel pressured to decide on the spot. The mint tea and the storytelling are part of the atmosphere, not a debt you owe.
