Ouarzazate is often treated as a one-night stop on the way to the desert, but it deserves better. Sitting where the High Atlas meets the pre-Sahara, it is the natural hub for the whole kasbah country: the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs runs east through Skoura and the Dades, the Draa valley drops south toward Zagora, and the old caravan route climbs northwest over the mountains via Telouet. Almost every headline sight of southern Morocco is within a half or full day, which makes the town a smart base for two or three nights rather than a quick overnight.
It also has plenty in town to anchor a trip: the Taourirt kasbah, the Atlas and CLA film studios that earned the area the nickname Ouallywood, and a good spread of places to eat and sleep. This roundup focuses on the excursions; for the town itself and where to stay, see the Ouarzazate guide and where to stay in Ouarzazate. If you would rather book a packaged excursion than self-drive, the commercial Ouarzazate tours page lists organised options.
The table below ranks the main excursions by distance and gives realistic drive times and the trip length each one needs. Use it to match sights to the time you have: if you only have a morning, the near oases and Ait Benhaddou are the pick; with a full day you can reach the Draa valley, Telouet or the gorges. Drive times assume normal conditions and a photo stop or two, and the mountain roads to Telouet and the gorges are slower than the distances suggest.
A sensible plan for a two-night stay is one half-day (Ait Benhaddou plus the studios) and one full-day (the Draa valley or Telouet), leaving an evening for the Taourirt kasbah in town. Three nights lets you add Skoura and the Dades. The nearer sights can be reached by shared grand taxi, but for the full-day trips a hired car or driver is far more practical.
| Destination | Distance | Drive time each way | Ideal length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ait Benhaddou (ksar) | ~30 km | ~40 min | Half day |
| Fint oasis | ~30 km | ~1h (rough track) | Half day |
| Skoura oasis & kasbahs | ~40 km | ~40 min | Half / full day |
| Draa valley (to Agdz) | ~70 km | ~1h15 | Full day |
| Telouet (Glaoui kasbah) | ~120 km | ~2h (old road) | Full day |
| Dades / Todra gorges | ~120-170 km | ~2-3h | Full day |
The unmissable half-day is Ait Benhaddou, the fortified earthen village, or ksar, that rises in tiers above the Ounila river about 30 km west of Ouarzazate. A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photographed places in Morocco, it has doubled for countless films and series, from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones. Crossing to the ksar and climbing through its lanes to the granary at the top, with the Atlas as a backdrop, takes a couple of hours; go early or late to avoid the harsh midday light and the tour crowds.
Because Ait Benhaddou is so close, it pairs naturally with the film studios back in town. The Atlas Studios and the nearby CLA Studios offer tours of standing sets and props from major productions, an easy add-on that fills the rest of a half-day. Together they make a relaxed introduction to the region. For the studios in detail, see the Ouarzazate film studios guide, and for the wider route west, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs guide.
Two contrasting palm oases make gentle half-days. Skoura, about 40 km east on the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, is a lush palmery dotted with earthen kasbahs, the most famous being Kasbah Amridil, a much-photographed fortress that once featured on Moroccan banknotes and is open to visitors. Wandering or cycling the tracks between the palms and the crumbling towers is a peaceful antidote to the arid plateau, and Skoura also has some lovely kasbah hotels if you want to linger; the Skoura and Dades kasbah hotels guide covers those.
Closer but wilder, the Fint oasis lies about 30 km south down a rougher track, a hidden green canyon where a seasonal river supports Berber villages and palm groves in an otherwise stark landscape. It is a favourite film location and feels genuinely off the beaten path; a 4x4 or a driver who knows the piste is the easiest way in. Both oases reward a slow morning rather than a rushed tick-list visit; the Fint oasis guide has the access detail.
For a full day, three directions open up. South, the road drops into the Draa valley, a ribbon of palm groves and kasbahs running toward Agdz and eventually Zagora; even just to Agdz and back, about 70 km each way, gives you the classic oasis-and-kasbah scenery and a taste of the desert route. It is the natural half of a longer desert trip but stands alone as a day out; the Draa valley pages cover the wider journey south.
Northwest, the old caravan road climbs to Telouet, about 120 km away, where the vast, crumbling kasbah of the Glaoui warlords hides astonishing painted ceilings and zellij behind a plain exterior. It is a full day, often combined with Ait Benhaddou via the scenic Ounila valley back road, and the Telouet kasbah guide explains the history and access. East, the Dades and Todra gorges, with their soaring rock walls and switchback roads, are a longer full day at 2-3 hours each way but among the most dramatic drives in Morocco.
How you travel depends on the trip. For the near sights, Ait Benhaddou, Skoura and the studios, shared grand taxis run from Ouarzazate and are cheap, though you may need to negotiate a wait and return for the ksar. For the oases off the main road, such as Fint, and for any full-day run to Telouet, the Draa or the gorges, a hired car with a driver is by far the most practical choice, and splits well among a group. Self-driving is straightforward on the main roads but the pistes to Fint and the old Telouet road demand care.
The table gives realistic mid-2026 costs. As a rule, a local driver for a half-day to Ait Benhaddou and the studios is modest, while a full day to the gorges or Telouet costs more because of the distance and hours. Agree the itinerary, the waiting time and the price before you set off, and confirm whether entry fees (for Kasbah Amridil, the studios or Telouet) are included; usually they are not.
| Trip | Best transport | Rough cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ait Benhaddou + studios | Grand taxi or driver | 150-600 MAD | Cheapest by shared taxi with a wait |
| Skoura oasis | Grand taxi or driver | 200-500 MAD | Kasbah Amridil entry extra |
| Fint oasis | 4x4 / driver | 400-700 MAD | Rough track; local driver advised |
| Draa valley (Agdz) | Car / driver (day) | 700-1000 MAD | Full day, fuel and time |
| Telouet kasbah | Car / driver (day) | 800-1200 MAD | Often combined with Ait Benhaddou |
| Dades / Todra gorges | Car / driver (day) | 900-1300 MAD | Long day, 2-3h each way |
Seasons shape the experience. Spring and autumn are ideal, with warm, clear days perfect for the oases and kasbahs. Summer is hot and exposed on the plateau, so start early and keep the middle of the day for shade, lunch or the film studios. Winter days are bright and pleasant but mornings are cold, and snow can close the Atlas passes toward Telouet and Marrakech, so check conditions before attempting the higher routes between December and February.
To get the most from Ouarzazate, plan at least two nights. A workable pattern is: arrive and see the Taourirt kasbah and studios; a half-day to Ait Benhaddou; and a full day to either the Draa valley or Telouet, depending on whether you prefer oasis or mountain scenery. Add a third night for Skoura and the gorges. Treating Ouarzazate as a hub rather than a pit stop turns a region often glimpsed from a tour-bus window into a proper, unhurried exploration; the things to do in Ouarzazate overview helps fill the in-town time.
The standout is Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO ksar just 30 km west, an easy half-day paired with the film studios. Other top options are the Skoura and Fint oases (half-days), the Draa valley toward Agdz, the Glaoui kasbah at Telouet, and the Dades and Todra gorges, all full-day trips into the region's kasbah and mountain scenery.
Ait Benhaddou is only about 30 km west of Ouarzazate, roughly a 40-minute drive, which makes it an easy half-day trip. Go early in the morning or in the last couple of hours before sunset, when the earthen ksar glows gold and the mid-morning tour crowds have thinned. It pairs well with the Atlas or CLA film studios back in town.
At least two nights to do the region justice. That lets you combine a half-day at Ait Benhaddou and the studios with a full day to the Draa valley or Telouet, plus the in-town Taourirt kasbah. A third night adds Skoura and the gorges. Ouarzazate rewards being used as a hub rather than a single overnight stop.
Not for the nearest sights: Ait Benhaddou, Skoura and the studios are reachable by shared grand taxi. But for the Fint oasis piste and any full-day run to Telouet, the Draa valley or the gorges, a hired car with a driver is far more practical and splits well among a group. Self-driving works on the main roads if you are confident.
A half-day to Ait Benhaddou and the studios by shared taxi is modest, from around 150 MAD; a hired driver for a half-day is roughly 300-600 MAD. Full-day runs to Telouet, the Draa valley or the gorges cost about 700-1300 MAD for the car because of the distance. Entry fees for sights such as Kasbah Amridil or the studios are usually extra.
Yes. The Atlas Studios and the nearby CLA Studios both offer tours of standing sets and props from major films and series shot in the region, which has earned the nickname Ouallywood. They are in or beside the town, so they make an easy add-on to a half-day at Ait Benhaddou or a relaxed in-town afternoon.
Spring and autumn are ideal, with warm, clear days. Summer is hot on the exposed plateau, so start early and rest at midday. Winter days are pleasant but mornings are cold, and snow can close the Atlas passes toward Telouet and Marrakech, so check road conditions before attempting the higher mountain routes in the coldest months.
